Another potential rabbit hole... NI Expansion Packs - a couple have taken my eye, and appear to sit roughly in right place genre wise. Anyone here an NI Universe specialist? Do expansion packs represent good value?
There should be plenty to be getting on with , stock sounds. I would urge you to learn the software as well as it is kind of meant to be used in harmony. That way you can download free (non NI) samples, make your own patches/programs etc. If presets are your thing then the standard packs and free NI stuff should cover pretty much all bases. Expansions are more of the same imho. Agree with octatonic. Perhaps go further and say in the Long run it does save time.

Have a mikro and komplete 10 ultimate. Not a big fan of either tbh for drums. Prefer the good ole drum machine ITB or hardware, Found it tricky to get a proper groove with just maschine software and workflow to do that generally a PITA. But its interesting to rig it up as a hardware controller for other VSTi drums/samplers as well if you have a daw.
    Dont worry, be silly.

Yes. I'm exploring the NI stuff at the moment to see what comes of it, but fully intend to use it as a hardware controller for vsts I use in Reaper.

Keep a look out for when NI run a "9 for 99" promo on their expansions, usually twice a year. £11 per expansion.

On the drum samples... I now know it's the sound of an E-mu Drumulator that I'm hearing on Cocteau Twins albums I'm most familiar with. Wonder what drum machine Big Black used hehe...
This ^ they started with an 808, then Drumulator with the ‘Rock Chip’ set - so it’s grainy short samples of John Bonham. Later on it’s Linn and then Emu Sp12 and on to Akai MPCs. Guthrie was an OK programmer - he used a bit of ‘Swing’ in the beats which is part of why they sound so good in terms of feel. I’m not a Cocteau fanatic I just read an article recently.

  • Korg Electribe ER-1 is worth looking into. not very trendy, but the pattern mode is good and there's a lot of good sounds to be had.
