Walnut

What's Hot
My neighbour is taking down a walnut tree. I’ll walk over with a chain saw tomorrow, and see what I can salvage.

Disappointing morning. After two hours levering the trunk around and plunge cutting because the tree was too big for my saw I found that of two trunk sections one had curved heartwood, and in the other the heartwood split into two cores. However I did get some interesting crotches for bowl turning.

Note the exposed ends have been coated to reduce shakes and splitting.

    Now that's what I call a crotch shot  ;)
I love Walnut but it can be difficult to work.

@sgosden I was hoping to use it for making necks. Either as an alternative to Sycamore, or in combination. However the curved grain could cause the neck to warp over time. I might still use it for a body cap.

Yeah, tempted to use it for a cap on a headless. I find Vs uncomfortable to play
