Is it possible to use the top four strings
of an standard acoustic guitar string set on a tenor guitar to save me from having to buy a dedicated set?

CGDA , its an old tenor which is currently / originally strung with nylon strings I think.

A typical tenor set might be .010, .014, .022, .032. In an emergency, you might get away with the E, B, G and A strings from a regular six string set.

Better (and cheaper) to invest in a proper set - especially if your tenor guitar is longer scale than a typical six string guitar.

Newtone strings can probably suit you, sir. Oof!

If it’s old and originally built for nylon strings I wouldn’t put steel ones on.

It's over 100 years old, will go down the nylon string route but still need to find a suitable set.
