John Hall has retired and is now living in Wales.

Other companies are now trying their luck again.

Anyway - this SpecRick was a 1 off for Kip Winger. Never offered for sale anywhere so no drama.

    Looks good.

Still just looks like a ric to me.
The basses always look much better than the guitars. IMO.

Meh. A generic modern bass with a Rickenbacker body shape.

To be fair, I don't hate the idea of a Rick with different pickups. But I like the Taka Hirose approach

Horrific. It looks like one of those Tiesco-made 1970s copies. While it probably plays better and might sound better - although not necessarily - it's still far less interesting.

Mine's a 72 that's had a bit of a rough life.  I got it as just a body back in 1982 and managed to get  a Ric pickup for the neck position.  The bridge is a SD SMB-4A Musicman pickup and the bridge is a Hipshot replacement.  There is also no lacquer on the fingerboard and it is refretted with bass frets.  It has a master volume, active treble and bass and the switch is series/parallel for the SD.  The machine heads are original!

It's a Chickenbacker with a non-infringing shape (so effectively the worst of both worlds).
It looks as good as the one in the OP, though!

My '72 had similar variations; I fitted an SD humbucker to try and deal with noise/feedback whilst playing clubs in the 80s. It also had a Badass bridge, but I never quite gelled with that and subsequently put a Hipshot on it.

It's now been reverted to stock ('cos I like it better that way!).

  • Afraid I don't see the point of the one in the first picture. I assume it probably sounds like a Fender anyway (unless there are some special active electronics) The originals still look the best, to me anyway. I do understand why people have trouble with the tailpiece/bridge & the cover over the bridge pickup.
