Or Pigs x7.
I'm rather liking what I have heard of these energetic young scamps.
They are a Newcastle band, but the Newcastle gig (sadly sold out) is at Sage Gateshead, which is to me the most inappropriate venue for such a band. Go figure...

    I like it

Kind of like a more rough and ready Mastodon although I don't love the vocals.

I do like their sound and vibe, and have bought a few of their records. He's not a very dynamic vocalist and the songs don't really have much dynamics. I can do a few songs at a time. Maybe they have developed a bit with this new stuff

This. I hear one track and think, ‘brilliant!’ Then get bored. They’re very Sabbath, to my ears.

  • I do like this style of rock, and there's nothing wrong with this band, though I prefer others in this genre. I just find it slightly bemusing that they get so much attention and more widespread appeal above a whole host of other bands that make similar, if not better music. Perhaps it's because they have a more normal image of five regular blokes, over that of hardcore stoner/doomsters... is that more palatable?  Or maybe they have friends in the right places?

They're 6 Music darlings for some reason. Amazingly they seem to have crossed over from the stoner/sabbath thing to Guardian readers

I just put them on and after about 3 minutes the observation was made that they were just Mastodon but not as good.

Now listening to Mastodon and can confirm.

To be fair, Mastodon do have a 20 odd year head start & even they might have had influences (allegedly)  ;)

The guitarists wear their guitars very high.... not exactly typical of stoner/doom bands. Perhaps makes them more palatable to an indie type crowd, who wouldn't be into bands with your typical metal/doom band image. Just a thought.

I'm very old school, I still listen with my ears
Guitar style slinging wise, I couldn't give a shite about who wears what where.

Id have said high on fire and today is the day were the bigger influences on mastodon early on. And keelhaul perhaps beat them to the punch

Well I'm sort of with you on that, but as a 58 year old generally find the whole metal scene absolutely cringeworthy, so anyone who steps outside it image wise is to be applauded.

I swap playlists with an 18 year old work colleague every day and this band were on one of hers, and like others here I liked them in small doses.

Generic stoner rock/metal. I'd rather listen to Sleep or High on Fire.

I'm quite enjoying this. It's like a sort of inverted doctor who theme. With a man falling down a hole (always)

Sounds alot like the sadly departed Wet Nun from Sheffield to me. Great for a song or two but it does get a bit tiresome after a while.

A heavy Idles? The interviewer has that classic innocent American type of questioning. "Is Newcastle near Sheffield?" Then goes on to list all the famous people from Newcastle! :) Is it me or is the drummer an auld fella, as in, as auld as me!

  • How many pigs?
I feel like they need to change the name...
I would accept "Pigs to the Power of 7" (hear me out, it's easier than trying to remember/say "pigs" 7x) or even Pigs Times Seven would suffice?
