A before and after comparison would have been more useful, but I get the feeling this was just a clickbaity title to get people to buy his tunes on Spotify.  In my opinion the structural integrity of the soundboard could be compromised and it could start buckling or bowing in places, especially if he drilled through braces.  This is also a very bold statement that I disagree with.

I'm pretty sure that's one of those weird air-powered guitars, so those holes will let the air out. Over time it'll get quieter and quieter until all the air is gone.

Seems a bit mental, to me.. I won’t be doing it to any of mine..!
so if you fancy a reissue of a guitar they never made in a colour they never used then it probably isn't too overpriced.

He is changing the main cavity resonance. There is a mathematical relationship between the volume of air enclosed by the body and the size of the sound hole or holes. (Actually it has more to do with the length of the sound-hole edges, which is why F-hole guitars are so loud, but for round holes we can ignore that. And for multiple small holes, the maths would get horrendous. Let's just say "changing the resonant frequency" and leave it at that.)

Obviously, that will change the sound of the guitar, almost certainly for the worse. (Unless the maker was incompetent, which seems unlikely.)

We can probably discount changes to the top resonance, unless he has gone through braces they will likely be small.

And no, I'm not going to watch this click-bait. :)

Oh, and (pandering to my inner grammar pedant) you can't have a "new innovation", it's a tautology. "Innovation" comes from the Latin novellus, meaning new, or fresh or young. "New" comes from German and has the same meaning. So "new innovation" means "new new thing".

  • Btw I know a few luthiers that do this to good effect, just not in the way shown in video. True re "new innovation" and good post there!

Watched the first bit where he defiles a good instrument.
Surely anyone doing that would at least check for location of bracing first? I agree with BillDL that it's click-bait.
Also he was recording into a DAW so if he's competent with that (unlike me) he can tweak the track however he likes - to compensate for his compromised guitar!
Not for me, my friends.  :#

If there was anything in this, Andy Powers would already have a range of Multiple Sound Hole Enhanced Resonance Taylors on the market.  ;)

Having played one of - I think - this model once, I can honestly say that I can't think of anything that would make it sound worse, so by the simple law of averages, any random change would make it sound better.

Just looks deeply unattractive to me. If you want to put a hole anyway, put in a sound port. Much tried and now more mainstream since release of nicely mid-priced Gibson G-series last year.

  • I think he is just doing it as part of a quirky series to bolster viewing statistics  he recently did one where he filled an acoustic with water . He’s a good player & does some great lessons & also has a teaching patreon page . He can probably offset the cost of destroying a coup,e of guitars if he gets the views on his channel ,I’m not sure . Good player though

  • Just to note I'm never trying to slam the folk with these posts, just find them funny. A bit of click bait for sure.

He’s a very good player, and as we know a good player can usually get a good sound out of almost anything. Whether that means the guitar is good or bad, better or worse after drilling holes in it, is a different question.

I suspect that if that really was a good idea Orville Gibson would’ve been doing it since the nineteenth century, or we’d all be drooling over late 1950s Fender Gruyerecasters

If there was anything to be gained that way then (as said above) the likes of Martin, Gibson etc would've been on to it a lot sooner than he was. To my mind it's vandalism.

It's achieved its aim of driving traffic and increasing ad revenue to the site/channel no doubt.

@guitarjack66 ; oh it will have achieved that.

Still say it's not a nice thing to do to a guitar, though.

I'm not sure. Guitarists are generally conservative. Guitar makers trade on tradition, and are generally punished by the market for innovating.

@Sporky ; there's been changes like moving the soundhole (or even a collection of small ones) off to the side (Ovation for example). But there's thought behind it, whereas that guy (video) he's just drilling holes willy-nilly or seems to be
