Finish friendly tape

What's Hot
Just a quick one...

I have a pickup for my acoustic (kindly supplied by a forum member) and want to tape down the lead. I may fit it to the guitar properly in future, but for now I want to simply lash it up.

Would something like frog tape be OK with the finish? It's not nitro or anything like that, it's just a low-range Yamaha, but it's a nice finish and seems thin so I don't want to pull it off or have any glue seep into it.

  • How long do you think you’ll gave it on there?  I personally wouldn’t use any tape on a guitar.  Masking tape will be OK for a short while.  If the lead’s long enough I’d cable tie it to the strap button.

Unless you’re going for this look ….

  • You know, that looks perfect :) @ScreamingDave ;

I have the tape skills, but not the playing ability to emulate John Martyn :)

I'm not sure how long I will have it taped up - I'd like to be able to use it for bits and bobs of recording and remove it at other times. I'm no perfectionist, but the lead clanking on the body and pickup slipping now and then is annoying enough for me to want to attempt some sort of temporary fix.

We have some supposedly low-tac decorating tape, but maybe even that would be risky. The cable-tie idea may be worth investigating.

Few of us do.  A unique talent, but I dread to think what his gaffa tape bill was like for each tour.  :)

De-tack it first, ie before sticking onto the guitar.

Just put the bit of tape onto your jeans, pull off, and that’ll remove some of the sticky, but should leave enough sticky to stick the wire to the guitar.

Less sticky = less risk of damage.
Having trouble posting images here?  This might help.

  • You shouldn't have any problem with Frog tape on that finish, but don't leave it on too long just to be safe.

there's some wisdom right there  - try leaving normal masking tape on a window a few weeks too long !!
just because you don't, doesn't mean you can't

you can get less tacky tape: Frog tape. But again, don't leave it on for weeks

Maybe it rains more in Norway, so maybe easier to untape
