Fret sprout, I think, and buzz

What's Hot
Just got a used Yamaha DW 12 string (from Rich Tone). All good bar slightly lifted fret end on high E 6th fret. I can slide a bit of paper under it and it’s the only fret and only on highest of E string pair that buzzes. I’ve tapped end of fret quite gently with a hammer with some card covering the metal but nothing’s moving. Is there a clever way to do this? Relief is fine and it must be slight lifting that’s causing the buzz I presume. Any guidance appreciated…

If you're not confident, I'd say take It to a pro. You don't want to cause damage cos that will increase expense.

Theres Feline or CCGX. Either could sort it easily.

    :)

It doesn’t seem to want to be tapped down so probably needs something more subtle. PITA

    Low-viscosity superglue and a clamp?

That'd do it but I don’t have a clamp (although I can get hold of one).

Personally I would contact the retailer and ask whether they will cover the cost of taking it to a guitar tech to have it fixed professionally.  It wouldn't cost much.

Does the guitar have a bound fretboard?

The fret slots are cut to a uniform depth on a jig in the factory, but sometimes a bit of debris or glue ends up in the slot close to the binding and the tang of the fret won't go down any further no matter how many times you tap it or how firmly you clamp it.   Perhaps the fret has always been raised.   You can get bespoke "fret setting" tools that have a curved edge that you can use to press down on and hold the fret while gluing, or to tap the fret down.  You can improvise with a piece of wood or similar to see whether the fret end can be pushed down into position or whether something in the slot is blocking the tang.  If it can be pressed down into place but springs back up, you can hold it in position with your improvised tool while gluing it.  If it won't press down, the fret will probably have to be pulled, the slot scraped out right to the edge, and the fret (or new matching fretwire) hammered and/or glued back into the slot.

How to reseat a lifting fret with glue and clamping.

  • I agree, see if retailer will pay towards tech fix.
