This is a phenomenal pedal! And if, like me, you've never used synth with a guitar before then you're in for a treat. The BOSS SY-1 is super easy to use, has incredibly impressive tracking - seriously, you can shred a Hammond organ here and it'll keep up with you with a deeply satisfying ease. It's also one of the most inspiring pedals I've ever owned and the enormous variety of options - listed below - means that you'll not be stuck for ideas where riffs, chord progressions or building epic ambient soundscapes are concerned, especially if you add delay/reverb after the sound you select. Like all BOSS pedals it's easy to use and simple to operate plus, BOSS's enduring rugged build quality means that you can be confident that it'll survive the coming Apocalypse unscathed.
You know what? I have a sneaking suspicion that there's a wink to Spinal Tap deliberately shoe horned in here as this is 100% a pedal that goes up to 11. And legitimately so too. Why BOSS, you cunning devils! There are 11 seperate synth sounds in each category which adds up to a whopping 121 sounds all crammed together into this very familiar footprint for your pedalboard. It runs off the usual 9V PSU or will take a 9V battery if that's how you prefer to roll so no awkwardness there.
The guitar/bass switch is incredibly useful and means that the pedal is always EQd to bring out the best of whatever frequency range your stringed instrument prefers.
SY-1 sound types:
You can also hook up an external footswitch for tap tempo and octave-shift effects, or an external expression pedal for real-time control over tone and rate parameters. This opens up the synths to sweeps, pitch changes etc and offers a bonkers amount of musical flexibility to any number of the stock sound options.
There’s also a send/return loop to blend other pedals in parallel with the synth voices, while you can hold the onboard footswitch to sustain the most recent synth sound.
Do check out the video (below) for a demo of some of the sounds this pedal offers and, if you buy it, then I hope you have even half as much fun with this as I did!
I'm gutted to part with this but I plan on buying another in a few months. I'm only parting ways with this one as I need to raise the cash required to finish an ongoing guitar project so...off this one goes...
