Dear FB acoustic folk,

Tried out a used guitar in a shop today. I loved the neck shape on the guitar, so much so I may go for the guitar. But! the action was a little high and the saddle looked fairly low to me.. i.e. not much room to go lower.

Is there anything you could recommend me to check in trying to find the reason for this? As far as I could tell the neck was in decent shape relief wise, and the top hadn’t bellied up.

    Is it a glued-in neck or bolt-on (like a Taylor)?

    It will be a lot simpler to fix then. I have a couple of Taylors with the same issue, I’m planning to take them to a local approved Taylor tech, where I understand it’s just a matter of swapping out a shim to adjust the neck angle.

    ^ yep, nothing a decent tech can't sort :)

    Yep, bolt-ons are far simpler and cheaper to get the neck angle adjusted once the top starts to belly out. For this reason, I always thought a Taylor would make a good workhorse gigging guitar but I've never tried one I really gel with. 

    I only recently realised Atkin guitars have bolt-on necks! That, plus a lifetime warranty, makes them a very attractive choice for a high-end gigging acoustic.

    If it is a Taylor, then make sure your tech :
    (a) knows that it is a Taylor
    (b) they are not supposed to modify the saddle like one does on fixed necks
    (c) they have access to the set of Taylor shims, and don’t just manufacture any kind of shim

    There’s a funny video clip on YouTube of a guy who videos himself making all sorts of modifications to a Taylor guitar without knowing the above.  It’s quite funny because he keeps mentioning the name of the chap whose guitar it is, and that it’s in such a poor condition.
