Hello forum friends, I wonder if anyone could help. I’m possibly about to open a can of worms, however for a Martin. What is the feeling between gotoh se770’s and waverly’s? I’ve read conflicting reviews on both. Some talk of Waverley failing, but gotoh prices seem to good to be true.

just because you don't, doesn't mean you can't

I have Waverley's on my custom built 00-21s.

Get the Gotohs. Just because the Waverleys are more expensive they are not better by any stretch of the imagination, they are much stiffer and nowhere as smooth as the Gotohs or even Grover Sta Tite tuners I have or used.

Another vote for Gotoh's. Had two Waverleys fail, but all my Gotoh tuners run smooth for years and years.

I have 3 sets of Gotoh, 4 sets of Grover. Never had the slightest trouble with any of them.

  • Thanks for the replies. I’ll probably try the gotoh’s of your fine recommendations.

I’ve had Waverleys on several guitars over the years, I still have a Collings and a Dave King that have them and I have to say I don’t know why they command a premium. Not particularly smooth in operation and I’ve had two fail on me (one with the button coming loose on the shaft and one just falling to bits), one time actually in the gig. I’d go for the Gotohs.

Because they are made in the USA and everybody knows that everything made in the USA is better than everything made anywhere foreign.

(Seriously. That is the mindset. These are the same people who will assure you with hand on heart that Gibson make much better quality guitars than foreign companies like Yamaha, and that a Chevrolet is naturally better built and more reliable than inferior foreign cars.)
