Why does my K&K pure mini pickup set hum?

Only noticed recently, had the guitar a few years
Quite a noisy 50Hz- type hum, goes quiet when I touch the earth of the plug socket
I can't find any loose connections, battery is fine

Any ideas anyone?

    More often than not, such a hum is due to a poor earth. Check / change your leads then clean the sockets and go from there. You may find one of your jack leads is at fault. Doubt if it's the pick up.

    I think so, I loosened the nut and moved it around a little, it improved a bit (I think), but not gone away, compared to another one I have with same pickup plus mic
