  • This could be the challenge I've been waiting for, I was born in 84 but, thanks to my dad, I am a fan of Gary Numan, Depeche Mode, Human League, Spandau Ballet , Level 42, ultravox.... the list goes on!
I have a couple of synths too,
Time to break out that 80's feeling.

I think you need to edit the top post.

There's no mention of a time limit and it says no pic needed - this sounds like a leftover from cutting and pasting from Challenge #4?

    I'm assuming it's a 2 minute limit again?

Should be fun  :) could be almost anything but probably means jangly guitar to me

  • I have an old Quadraverb and an old Roland TR505 drum box knocking about somewhere - I think I may have to get them plugged in  for this one.

Yeah that is the idea, I thought the last challenge was a good idea but it might have been a bit too tough so time to be a bit more open again.

  • Now we're talking.

What a superb idea for a challenge!

Right, I'm going to have to listen to Absolute Radio 80's religiously on Friday nights for the next fee weeks.

    The 1980s ...

chart #1s in 1980 include the Pretenders (Brass in Pocket), the Specials (too much, too young), the Jam (Going Underground), Blondie (call me), Dexys (Geno) and Bowie (Ashes).

chart #1s in 1989 include Kylie & Jason Donovan, Marc Almond & Gene Pitney, Sonia, Jive Bunny and New kids on the block.  Oh, and the year started with the '88 Xmas #1 which was .... (wait for it) .... (you'll wish you hadn't) ... Mistletoe & Wine.

    That decade went downhill ...

  • I had a brainstorming session the other day - sorted out a deeply cheesy chorus from the Quadraverb and came up with the germ of an idea. My entry may end up a bit like The Police backing Frank Zappa. Or it may change entirely?

Do it well and I'll give you five points ...

I fancy some Jan Hammer Miami Vice action .... I've managed to create a passable synth patch I just need to create a Linn drum sound and then I'm in business.

    That's instant disqualification!

Thankfully, I managed to bail out within three beats of the intro. Phew!

I've been listening to a lot of 80's music recently but I find that the songs that I like from the 80's don't necessarily have an 80's sound. If you take a song like C'mon Eileen for example, it's not a million miles away from something Mumford and Sons might release today. Similarly some of U2's 80's classics sound very similar to The Killers today.

So I'm finding this challenge a little more tricky than expected. My first couple of ideas didn't sound 80's enough. I was initially trying to avoid using a chorus pedal but I think it's time to go fully 80's with this one!, - synth, chorus and harmonizer at the ready.
