Cover Challenge 16 "C"

What's Hot
right then my little pickles.. Welcome to the 16th Cover Challenge

The rules are simple - there are no rules*

We all start with the same song suggestion and record our own cover version. It's up to your imagination as to what you do with it. It could be faithful to the original or as out there as you wish.

@bezzer has spoken and the choice for the next cover challenge to be covered in the cover challenge is:

Wait for it....

"Cardiff" by Stone Sour

https://youtu.be/c7meuHwLdAk

but... there’s a twist... you can choose to cover the Stone Sour track or you can choose to cover ANY song beginning with the letter “C”

however... if you cover the Stone Sour track you automatically get a bonus 5 points... if you cover the other you start from scratch!...

RULES:

Entries to be sent in mp3 format to the following Email address:

covers@thefretboard.co.uk

You may wish to submit artwork to go with your entry. It brightens up the playlist and might subliminally get you more votes but it's not mandatory.

Entries close at 11.30pm on Friday 26th November... get cracking

A playlist (below) of all the entries will also be posted in the voting thread. Vote for your top 3 with 5 points awarded  for first place, 3 points for second place and 1 point for third place. Entrants obviously aren't allowed to vote for their own entry.

We have similar thinking clearly! Although I’ll probably abandon that when I realise I’m crap at industrial!

ha, yes. So I started and already it's ended up pseudo cinematic. Not quite what I was after, but let's see where it goes. I'm trying to figure out Butch Vig drums at moment, clearly my refusal to read instructions or tutorials is not paying off at all. Might have to ditch my pride and watch some YT.

Basically this track is a load of eastern tinged riffing in C#. that's my basic assessment!! Lob in some angsty vocals, sorted. Righto then,,,,

Like last time I'd not heard of the song or artist before, though wikipedia tells me some members went on to be in Slipknot.

@poopot I would love to kick back over a bag of popcorn and see reactions to this on The Gear Page or TDPRI. I imagine it wouldn't go down so well

Balls to em :) floyd are not as sacred as Floyd fans like to think…

I think my cover has done it justice to be fair…

    dodgy vocals - check
    dodgy production - check
    dodgy pentatonic solo - check
    dodgy strings - check
    pig - check

    I’ve also shortened it so that’s a bonus :)

Only if the cigarettes were brand and vintage correct

  • Well at this rate I'll need 6 months for this one. I've spent the past 3 days alone, just trying to replicate the massive drum sound of "Cardiff" (which doesn't really come across in the the Youtube clip).

At one point I didn't realise I had my monitors turned up loud while I was listening on headphones, which led to a spell in the doghouse.

    It's not a competition.

my youngest, who's studying music A level, and is quite an accomplished bassist and pianist can't understand the hype around Comfortably Numb. I explained how the solos are so highly regarded and her view was "what's so clever about them, its a bit boring".

Personally, I love the track, but it is very over hyped

I've never really warmed to Pink Floyd at all, I think partly due to the slightly dour lyrics and vocal delivery. Then last year I wrote and recorded a song about the pandemic, and a good friend said it reminded him of Roger Waters!

The only thing the solo has going for it is it shows you how the relative major/minor works…

Bmin pent over the Bm parts
Bmin pent over the Dmaj parts…

I don't mind them but I find a lot of it very middle of the road. They are one of those bands that you are "supposed to like" if you know what I mean. Queen are another - really not for me at all. Dull.

I think I am going to have to start from scratch with this cover. I don't like what I've done so far, it's a mess.

I've just decided to try to recreate the "Cardiff" backing with no vocals. It's become a bit of an obsession.

I'm using it as an exercise to try to replicate the sounds. I'm not even sure I'll finish it at this rate, but I'm learning a lot in the process.

And, if I do finish, I don't expect any votes.

    It's not a competition.

I quite like Queen, their first album being the first proper cassette I ever owned. Another of my crimes though is not really liking Led Zep.

I'm mixing my attempt, and concluding that compression is a dark art. It's not Cardiff, but 5,260 miles away.

This is a good thing to do! I did that with Hand Cannot Erase. Purely an exercise in tone matching and production. I learned so much in the process.

And obsession is right, you get so close and then … “I can get this closer”. Good luck!!

Compression is indeed a dark art, and very cool if you can get to grips with it. I use it a lot, in the hope that eventually it will work properly!

In fact, mixing, EQ, compression, etc etc is all a dark art. And then you have the weird thing that is mastering, It's all a bit of a stab in the dark for me, and I started doing PC recordings in err....about 1995!

Personally I don't think I'm ready for that yet.

I only started on the home recording road in January 2020, and used Garageband 'because it was there'. Then a couple of weeks ago I bought my first plugin, and as it has an AU version I concluded it would work with Garageband. It does, but I then discovered that GB has limited midi features, so it doesn't work fully. Consequently I'm now a Logic Pro X owner with another learning curve.

Sent in my 'C' entry. I still have the 45rpm vinyl single I bought all those years ago and played over and over again.
