playing behind and ahead of the beat

hi all,

i am attempting to learn these techniques, or "feel" if you like.

any tips, online lessons you know of will be appreciated. also any recordings that might help demonstrate the feel will be helpful. i was thinking, is "sitting on the dock of the bay" behind the beat?

    Am awaiting any further replies to this with interest as it's something I hear mentioned a lot but very rarely demonstrated.

    My own experiments trying to actually play on/ahead/behind the beat have only ever revealed how absolutely shocking my timing is!

    Stolen this from a jazz forum because I think it sums it up quite well -

    Think of it like this:

    Sit and rock in a rocking chair.

    First sit upright, rock back and forth.

    Second, lean back and slouch, rock back and forth.

    Third, lean way forward, rock back and forth.

    You're still rocking back and forth, it's just a different feeling.

    My interpretation has always come from the likes of Jimmy and Eddie, Chuck Berry etc... the contrast between a shuffle and straight eights will give you the feel of pulling and pushing the beat around. I also think Jeff Healey did it very well.

    If you listen to Van Halen's hot for teacher on the verse you can hear both pushing and laying back in one riff. 

    Billy Gibbons tends to lay just behind ... this helps create a thicker sound from a 3 piece band.

    Dave Grohl tends to push forward  for urgency 

    At least that's how I hear it
