Surprise NGD

I wasn't expecting to buy this LG-2 from Coda. I've been trying loads of small bodied acoustics and nothing seemed as good as the heap of crap I already had. But this just felt right to me. I'm really enjoying playing it now.

The only thing wrong is the pickup - I don't really need it and if I did want one, it wouldn't be the one that's in it. It also looks too glossy and new. Soon change that.

  • Awesome. I’ve never played an actual LG2 but I just the Atkin version and it’s amazing.

Amazing guitars that somehow never quite hit the mainstream like dreads and 000s

Ah. You've seen my Gibson and raised me an Atkin. I did try an Atkin - it played just as nicely if not better but the sound wasn't quite right for me. (And I started out my quest saying that I didn't really care about the sound).

That's lovely. I bought one from Coda last year - sunburst - and I really like it. Is that part of the 'original '50's' series? If so, I think they're great - it persuaded me to buy a J45 and an L-00 from the same series.

The LG-2 is a lovely compromise between the J-45 and L-00, I think. You can get the 'big' sound from it (not as big as the J-45, obviously) and the Delta Blues type sounds, although not as focused as the L-00, again obviously.

But if I had to have just the one out of those three, it would be the LG-2.

Very nice. I do dislike when acoustics come with pickups when it should be a choice (IMO).

  • This is meant to be a house guitar but I couldn't resist taking it for an outing to an open mic.

The pickup is okay for this kind of event but I've got plenty of other guitars that I already use for live work so I think this one will take it easy at home. Really nice to play though so I might change my mind. But what do I do about that pickup?

That looks a nice little fella @BenSirAmos - any chance of a sound clip? :)

  • Can you take the pickup out ? Never liked acoustic guitars with pickups in, apart from a duncan woody, which you can remove if needed.

It's under the saddle so I'll get it out when I've carved a replacement saddle - that is. if it isn't fixed in with something awkward. Until I change strings, I don't know what the electrics are like.

I thought I would record before a string change and after a string change and then compare with my old Tanglewood. But I only had my old iphone to record on and each recording ended up sounding identical to the others so I don't think there is any point in posting those clips: I know they are all very different but the iphone just isn't good enough.

And there certainly isn't any point in posting clips of me live at the open mic because I'm not sure you would be able to hear anything of the guitar over me bellowing and the pa wasn't that good (and the pickup is so so).

But I shall try to find some way of recording it properly soon so that you can get an inkling of what it sounds like.

I changed strings today - so I now know it is possible to remove the under-saddle pickup but there is still electrics inside to tidy up. I'll start carving a new saddle to replace the saddle but I'm going to think about it some more. I'm not sure what I would gain if I'm not going to use the guitar outside the house.

If I do want to use it live again, I could try using my fishman blend which would fit in the soundhole and see if it warranted a more permanent fix
