Atkin J45 advice

Hi all

I’m liking the Atkin a bit too much… but the partial refret (by the look of it) is putting me off…I’m a bit rubbish on Acoustic condition but what does the combined esteemed gathering think?

Well, I owned a 43 and it was quite simply superb. Still miss it.

Why the question? Are you buying the guitar or thinking of selling it? Have you phoned Atkin themselves?

Thinking of buying it, but the picture of the frets in the picture where the frets look very different at about fret 5, and the fret ends on the close up look a bit basically shaped and potential wood damage around the new frets…a better trained eye is all I’m after

Difficult to advise just from photos but some things you could check. Does it play OK on all frets with no buzzes? Run your fingers along the fret ends and make sure that feels smooth and doesn't snag. Lay a metal ruler along fingerboard on the top of the frets and make sure they're aligned. Ask Atkin what they think. Take it to a luthier. Ask yourself just how much a slightly imperfect appearance bothers you if everything else is fine.

From the angle in the first photo they do look a bit bluntly cut. Has the seller confirmed a refret?

I've only seen a few Atkins in the flesh and the only thing I remember is I didn't like the way they sounded and the fretwork seemed really average on all of them, the ones in the picture don't look unlike the ones I've played.

Atkins are fabulous acoustic guitars, but the fretwork on them often leaves something to be desired. If you had spoken to Alister I'm sure he'd sort it out.
