Struggling to get a v3. Now looking for a v2 or a
combination of Orange Kongpressor + Ibanez TS mini.

Original message:

Hi,
I would like to experiment with a compressor, but I have no idea if it will suit my playing style. Therefore, I would like to buy something ideally for less than £25 postage included (or local collection in York). Something along the lines of a Marshall ED-1, or a well-used Boss CS-3?
Thanks for reading,
Jon

    @Yorkie (Jon)

I have a "Dino Comp" (it's a Dyna Comp clone - geddit?) you can have for £25. Orange case with cute dinosaur on the front. I'm also in York, so could get it to you easily.

    Let me know...

    Hi,
Thanks all for your suggestions. I went down a rabbit hole yesterday after seeing this beautiful Dino Comp from @robinbowes – had absolutely no idea how much certain compressors may colour your sound. I think I need to put this on hold, and read and listen much more before spending any money. Sometimes it sucks to be an ignorant.

  • Knowing there's stuff to learn is so much better than not knowing there's stuff to learn.

The Joyo is a Ross clone
The Dynacomp has a handful of resistors different
I've heard a lot of good things about all the pedals offered..  I've not owned the ED1 but a mate swears by his.

Good luck on the journey of discovery

    Jon,

Happy to lend you it for a while. Might also have a CS-3 you could try too. I've even got a Cali76 Compact Deluxe, but that's a bit out of your price range.

The Behringer compressor is pretty much the boss compressor -£19 from Amazon. That’s within price range and a good place to start imho.

Thanks for the offer, very kind! I’ve just borrowed a TC Electronic Forcefield compressor from a neighbour who’s no longer playing. Will have a go in the evening, all being well.

From what I can gather, this ‘Forcefield’ is a cheap pedal, possibly with Behringer electronics (with i/o at the top, a first for me), which would make it a clone of… Boss CS-2? If only just for the number of knobs and the role they claim to play.

I have a Mooer Yellow Comp. Clone of the highly respected Diamond comp.

Subtler than a dynamic comp (although can get spanky at higher settings)

     Pm me if you're interested.

    Hi,
Thanks for the offer. As a matter of fact, I still waiting to try my neighbour's – there's something wrong with the battery connectors and will need to find time to fix that.

Thanks everyone. I’ve finally been able to investigate a bit more. Having fixed the battery cable on the Forcefield compressor I borrowed from my neighbour, I can say that I definitely have use for one. It’s great fun. That said, this one (and probably most cheap models) can get real noisy with sustain after ‘noon’. Therefore, I think I need to save a bit more money and get something i) better designed and/or ii) with a noise gate. I think something along the lines of a Route 66 v3 would be amazing.

With respect to the compressor I have borrowed, the TC Electronic Forcefield: judging by the board & components, it’s a clone of a Behringer CL-9 (based on the same chip, V13700M), which in turn is a clone of an Ibanez CP9 according to https://www.tonestart.com/ultimate-behringer-guitar-pedal-clone-list/

So that was a useful exercise in the end. I’ve learned a lot. Although now I think I need to update the title :)

I’ve got one of the standalone Route 66 compressors (without the overdrive pairing), it’s a fantastic compressor, really clear and adds a lovely top end sparkle (sorry can’t think of how else to describe it). Highly recommend it.

Thanks for the recommendation; I think I would like to have the dual pedal as I have read that the overdrive part is a tube screamer clone and I don’t have one. But no idea how expensive the v3 will be. I have also read that there’s a dip switch that activates a noise gate in the v2.

I don't know much about the differences between the various versions but I have a v.1 and have used it for years. It's a fantastic, versatile thing (that's not for sale), but I'm just mentioning it in case you'd consider broadening your search to include a v1 or a v2. I think they'd make you very happy (unless there's something specific v3 does that v's 1 and 2 don't do).

    VS/TT make such great stuff!

Thanks for your comment. It's the switchable noise gate, and the 'blend' controls for both the compressor and the overdrive. Also the footprint – V1 and V2 are noticeably bigger as far as I've seen.

Ah, I see - makes sense. Blend on a comp is really useful; my favorite comp of all time is the old Barber Tone Press which has that feature.

    Good luck with the search.

Thanks! I had also identified the Keeley Aria as a potential candidate (also has blend control), but the feedback I've read isn't as positive – need to done more research on that, because the Keeley seems to be more widely available 2nd hand (a bad thing perhaps?).

I bought a Wampler Ego based on having a blend function and it's perfect for what I want, to play clean or fingerstyle or tighten up overdrive sounds.

Previously I had a Boss CS3 and a Marshall ED1, both were fine but sounded a little too much like there was an effect being added, I have 50/50 compressed signal with uncompressed and that sounds too my ears like an improvement on the clean sound but without an effect being added.
