Are these Elixir Nanowebs genuine?

Hi everyone.

'Bought a couple of sets of Nanowebs on eBay, from two different suppliers. Identical spec, but what turned up was different - please see photos.

I contacted Elixir and they just gave their standard response - 'yes, there's probably lots of fakes...only buy from authorised retailers...'.

Does the simpler, plainer packaging definitely mean that one - at least - is fake?

Thanks :-)

  • The pack on the left is the old style art, which is a clue that they are probably fake.  It’s a bit difficult to tell without better photos, but the dull printing suggests they are almost definitely fake.  I bought some fakes off of eBay and the pack looked similar.

Obviously you have the option to raise this with eBay and get a refund.

Were they cheap?  I’ve learnt that cheap Elixirs are fakes.  If you want to save some money on them, authorised dealers do get 3 for 2 offers from time to time.

  • I've got a small supply of these and I have examples of both packaging styles.
Yours look okay from here: no obvious errors...good print quality, etc.

The only thing that looks wrong to me is the .010 gauge for acoustic ;)

  • Would be useful to see a close-up of a wound string and the inner sleeve from each pack.

For the record, I wouldn't use a random Ebayer for these. Might cost a bit more from a reputable source but they last, in some cases, for years.

  • Usually fakes are in the older packaging. If you compare the windings at the ball end you can tell the fakes. If so ask for a refund under goods not as described.

How much did you pay for them ??

Too cheap then they're fake - my gut says they're fake anyway. I buy mine from my local shop no fakes just good value ;)

I received some fake ones in the old packaging
If you get a magnifying glass and look at the windings on the thickest strings, you can see the transparent coating between the windings

Many thanks to everyone for your replies.

Yes, they were cheaper than normal shop bought, but were in auctions, so I set my limit in order to get a bargain. I cannot be certain, then, if they were cheap-cheap, or cheap-lucky :-) I got them for between £6 and £7 each, from two different sellers.

One pack - the glossier, embossed box - looks identical to an earlier set I bought from a known reliable source. My suspicions naturally fell on the plainer-looking pack, but from some comments above this might just be an earlier package style?

I was wondering if there was something conclusive about them before I open them up, but will now open and check out the contents.

Yes, I know they are super-light! This is for a small-bodied, slim-necked electro-acoustic, and I'm setting it up for maximum playability for a beginner.

    Thanks everyone.

Yep, plain is newer branding...the purple bit is less glossy to the touch, almost matt and the 'Elixir' text is embossed...sounds like you've done alright.

    Thanks DKettle.

There is seemingly nothing obviously bad that's standing out - cool.

    Happy New Year, all.

  • I bought a couple packs from alibaba as a punt and the packet looked quite legit. As soon as they were out of the packet, you could tell. Would probably be the same with these if they were fakies.
