    I would say the biggest mistake is not to get some form of lessons,even if you are a good standard guitarist,which I am not personally but getting lessons at the beginning of my journey has improved me more in my eyes than I ever thought I'd be after a short while. I'm sure professional musicians still seek advice from each other or some guru they use for sharpening their skills. The best people in any field are usually the people who are always looking to learn more stuff and not afraid to ask for help.
