Near miss with Hercules wall hanger

What's Hot
DiscoStuDiscoStu Frets: 5261
I hung a guitar up last night and it almost fell off the Hercules wall hanger. The hanger bit is loose and flopping, further inspection reveals the metal support tube has failed and is now in 2 bits.
I fitted it 3 years ago.
Anyone else had this happen?

Not good I agree - But I have loads of Hercules brackets on the shop wall - Have done so for over 15 years and not had any issues - So hopefully a one off

Wow, wouldn't expect a short metal tube like that to shear.....sure you not been hanging the kids on it when they are naughty as they are handy for that

Glad you didn't get a casualty because of it, my opinion of Hercules of late has gone down what with 3 stands having the plastic adjuster melt and then disentegrate and their CS didn't even respond to my email

Wow. I have two of those up. Always assumed if they failed it would be at the fixation to the plasterboard (I’ve gone into the studs though).

Ive found their customer service good. They replaced the hanging yolk part at the top of one of my guitar stands free of charge (after several years) as the foam developed a dip down to metal.

Do you think Hercules would replace it? I can't find any warranty info on them.

  • That’s a bit of a shocker, I’ve always regarded Hercules stuff as the best there is and own quite a few of their stands and wall hangers. I guess that it’s probably a one off, ( fingers crossed ).

I used to have all my guitars on them until I found a couple coming off the wall but it was the screws coming loose from the brick rather than the actual hanger breaking.

I just go by the idea that any kind of stand or holder could fail so would rather a guitar toppled over from being upright to it falling from 4 feet high.

Only one I have hanging now is my Squier from when I was 12 which I solely have as a keepsake.

  • Blimey, that was close! I no longer have any hangers but stuck with Hercules floor stands as they are widely regarded as the best of the bunch. I wonder what their position would have been if the worst had happened.

If this is the one-off freak incident it seems then it would surely be good business for them to replace a damaged guitar.

Would do so much for sales giving the confidence that they'll almost definitely never break and in the freak occasion it does they've got you covered anyway.

Mind you, maybe that would open up a lot of fraudulent claims. The liars and cheats always spoil it for the rest.

  • I’d message Hercules on their fb page and would expect an answer.   Very surprised at this but organic matter happens!

The guitar that was on it was 6.4lbs, a Godin Radiator.
The Hercules site states a maximum load of 15.4lbs, so it wasn't even at half load.

As @maltingsaudio suggested, I'd definitely email them with a pic. I'd expect a replacement and a 'thank you' for giving them a product improvement angle.

If anyone has some of these AND young kids watch out for my particular experience of failure mode:
Small helpful child reaches up to base of guitar and pushes upwards to helpfully get guitar for dad. Gates open and guitar swan dives over small child and lands neck down, comes to rest in two pieces.

  • I had hercules unexpectedly replace a head on a 10 year old stand.  It was only missing half a rivet.  Dealt with the UK distributor.  Great service.
kudos to your wall fixing skills that the metal tube broke first!

    Sounds promising re: replacement!
I fitted these using red 18mm GripIt fixings. SOLID.

That's bad on multiple levels.  Sorry to hear about your guitar, and I hope it didn't give your small child too much of a fright.

I think that may have occurred due to the development of a fatigue crack. If so, it wouldn't have had to reach the maximum safe load capacity in order to fail. Either way, very concerning for the safety (and value) of what it had to support.

Wow!  Off to check mine, I’ve got a bass and a jumbo hanging from them, which sit above a triple floor stand ...

    That’s really bad!
so if you fancy a reissue of a guitar they never made in a colour they never used then it probably isn't too overpriced.

I could be wrong, but looking at the broken ends of the metal, that seems to be some sort of cheap alloy casting, not a steel tube. That's a bit worrying, even if it breaking doesn't allow the guitar to fall out of the hanger completely.

  • I had a near-miss with my a custom-built HJ Williams guitar. Found my Hercules hanger hanging off the wall! It survived - and it was the plaster that was the problem, not the hanger. Much scariness anyway.

  • How certain are you that they're actually Hercules hangers? I'm absolutely certain that they must be subject to fakes the same  as any other successful brand? Did you buy them from a reputable dealer?

I bought 5 of these hangers directly from Amazon in Dec 2017, two of which have failed this year holding less than the quoted maximum load.

Clicking on the seller link from the original confirmation emails now comes up as 'Stargoat Musical Services Ltd' in Banbury, Oxfordshire.

When I contacted Hercules (US) about the initial failure directly, they didn't want to know.
