Start at the slowest rate - contrary to popular belief - the slowest setting is the hardest to play against and where all your mistakes show up.

If you're feeling adventurous use the metronome to indicate beats 2 and 4 only.

I don't know if this answers your question, but I set the metronome to 40 on the day Guitar Techniques magazine comes out, and practise 40 crotchets or minims or quavers or semibreves per minute depending on how easy the music is, then I increase it one notch for each of my four practices per week over the next 8 weeks until the metronome reaches 152. By the time I've reached 80 bpm the next issue has been published, so I run 2 issues of the mag overlapping each other at the same time.
