I've got a couple of these that were on my 381 for a while... but that's gone to live with UnclePsychosis now, and I don't really have a use for them. They're in good used condition, although the foam pads are a bit rough - if you're top-mounting them it might be worth replacing them - Rickysounds sell them. They're quite expensive new - £135.95 at Rickysounds - I'll do them for £80 £70 each or £150 £130 for both, including postage.

Sold.

Apart from the mounting surrounds versus the rear-mounting thingies, how similar are these to the pickups on a 230 “Hamburg”?

I think they're the same internally in terms of the coils and magnets, but the casings are different even with the covers removed - ie they would sound the same, but can't be used to repair a 230 with missing pickups.

Yes, they are - although I have a possible interest in one of them - do you need one, or both?

I was hoping to get both for my 4003S bass

The HB1 is a guitar pickup. The screw holes in the mounting surrounds are in the wrong places for any RIC bass guitar except the semi-hollow 4005.

Fitting ICBM's HB1 pickups to a 4003S would involve modifying the pickguard around the neck position cavity.

The 230/260 type HB1 has height adjustment from below - like a Danelectro "lipstick tube" pickup.

RIC 2030 Hamburg bass pickups ought to fit a 4003S but they are single coils. Hence, no advantage over the stock pickups.

I've spoken to people who have installed these on their 4003s and they said there were no modifications needed. The Rickenbacker boutique website and Rickysounds also both say this works with all models, both guitars and basses, and actually they come stock on 4004 basses. I've also seen pictures of them side by side with hi-gains (the stock pickups) and all of that seems to check out. They appear to be the same size and shape as the hi-gains and to just generally be compatible physically. The only caveat I've come accross is that the phase of these and that of the hi-gains are opposites so if you were to mix the two types without accounting for that they'll be out of phase, but other than that, it's not meant to really be an issue afaik.

They are exactly the same size as the High-Gains and Toasters - I had all three on my 381, no modifications to the guitar. They are blade magnet pickups, no difference in the models for guitar and bass. (In fact, bass Toasters are also identical to guitar ones and have six magnets!)

Not only that, I actually had one of these HB1s in the neck position on my 4001 .

These two pickups must be from different series since they’re opposite magnetic polarities and need to be wired differently to be in phase in the same instrument - one red to hot (standard), the other blue to hot. It makes no practical difference, and they were definitely made like that. They look and sound identical otherwise.

    Sold. Thanks cmarc!
