I spend most of my time preparing classes or practising at low volumes so as not to upset everybody BUT on the odd chance to let rip I suddenly realise that when all that volume and harmonics are released then playing style has to adapt massively.

For a start diddly didly and fiddly fiddly don't cut it as anyone in a half mile radius can probably hear. All those harmonics need reigning-in and precise strumming and picking is massively important. It is almost as if I feel the need to produce great grinding riffs in pre-formed song-ettes..

I really need to concentrate on suitable riff sets for this ultra volume playing ~ 40w +

What do you bang out?? I find ZZ Top inspired riffs seem to fit-in quite nicely... (must learn some then!)

I don't like playing on 11 the noise and hum fucks with all the stops and articulations and the inevitably required noise gate chops note tails off. If drums could be turned down then I'd play on like 6 or 7, that's fairly loud so it sounds good but not enough that the volume interferes with the performance.

Sadly our drummer is mentally loud so I play on 11 alot.

The riff to I Am The Law by Anthrax. Just a big, chunky riff. I'm not especially keen on the song, or even that incarnation of the band (John Bush era only, for me) but still...

I generally switch to the neck humbucker and play 'Europa' by Santana.

Don't tell anyone, but they're both in the same key, with the same chords, and similar lead parts...........
