NGD - MJT Tele content

What's Hot
ESchapESchap Frets: 1427

After trying many Telecasters over the years and not really getting what they were about ....  Decided that I knew the "bits" I liked and should try to put one together myself.

Wanted the following ...

Light weight swamp ash body

Blond (relic)

V neck profile

Maple board 7 1/2" Radius

Vintage wind Alnico III pickups

NOT a black guard

So put together the following with JXG in Newcastle's help.

MJT body and Neck, Fender / Crazyparts hardware and genuine(!) 1957 knobs, Shed Pickups, Electrics (wired "50's and 3 position neck, both, bridge) pots are Stackpole 250k volume and 1meg tone, 0.047uF cap.

Really pleased with the results 6Lb 12oz guitar that is a very playable and versatile guitar.

Seem to have a thing about blond / white Fenders!

    That's absolutely lovely!
I was watching Jonathan Wilson playing a very similar looking Tele earlier on today:

I would love to get my Tokai Tele refinished in that colour but it wouldn't really be economical. Likewise an MJT body would probably be worth more than the whole guitar at the moment.

Excellent. How's the 1 Meg tone pot? I know they used to use them on teles but I've only ever used a 250k pot.

Lovely, though the guard is very white...!

What made you go for the 7.25" fingerboard radius out of interest, do you like a higher action and/or not bend the strings much?

Generous to compliment a competitor!  I've always really liked his vintage spec PAF's.  These Alnico 3 flatpoles really are a revelation.  So clear and dynamic, with tremendous "piano" bottom end.  Bridge has a really nice scoop to it and no ice pick.

I like the mid 50's white on white look, black guard is a bit hackneyed and belongs on the "fake tan" Teles :P .   JXG made me a beautiful Tortoise guard for this (I posted a photo in another thread).  But I'm not sure about it on this guitar.  Shame really, it's a work of art.

Pretty much £800 on the nose.

The 1 meg pot just delays the "woofiness" so you've got a bit more tone control.  I think that wiring it "50's" style is the winner on this guitar, definitely added detail to the tone when I compared the two ways of wiring.

The photos were taken with flash and that has bleached out the guard a bit.  But if you look at the early white guard telecasters and strats, the plastic stays very white not like the later 50's and 60's which discoloured a lot.  It's a fatboy guard and does look very realistic in the flesh.  I like the vintage radius, same on my Strat.  Sure you need to put the action up a bit but I use 11's and like the action a little higher so as I can "dig in " on bends.  With the right relief in the neck, I can get 3 semitone bend on the high E, B and G strings before it starts to choke .. enough for an old blues hacker like me  B-)

£800, absolute bargain. Though you may want to have a word about the paintjob, looks like they skimped on it a bit, it's all worn away like it's really old or something. But other than that, very shiny guitar.

    Very nice tele @redrighthand.

The Strat in the photo above is an MJT body with a 1983 fender neck.   Both bodies are light and really resonant.  Big fan of MJT's stuff.

Lovely, I'd be interested in a thinline body from them without the relicing.

Are their shipping rates to the UK reasonable? Also have to factor import duties in as well I guess...

Shipping on bodies is $55 just now, necks are a bit less. Always had to pay duty. Mainly VAT @ 20% inc the shipping costs plus Parcel Farce's "stand and deliver" £8 admin fee

    I think they are reasonable.

He'll combine postage too if you order more than one thing.

Cheapest option is to win one of his auctions. I'm getting a thinline (albeit hybrid) from him this way. You do get less choice then, but price can be good, e.g. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MJT-Official-Custom-Vintage-Aged-Nitro-Guitar-Body-by-Mark-Jenny-VTL-3-lbs-/290961945501?pt=Guitar&hash=item43beaef39d

  • The Strat in my avatar is a one piece ash MJT body in trans blonde. I got it in an auction at xmas.. a bit cheaper than normal. I used a mij 57ri neck. Imo Mark's stuff has more believable aging than the Fender cs stuff I've seen.
