New Snare Day.

DW 14x6.5 Exotic Limited Edition Tasmanian Timber snare.
I wanted one of these since they came out- the wood is grown near where I grew up and milled in Burnie where we lived for a couple of years.
It is made from Tasmanian Blackwood (Acacia melanoxylon), which is most similar to Koa.
Quite different to every other snare I have- woody and warm without being boxy.
Chuffed to finally have one.

    I'd never considered that but probably yes.

    DW are IMHO at the pinnacle of drum design- they really push the envelope but are not sometimes above pushing some pseudo-scientific ideas for the purposes of justifying upcharging.

    The vintage drum guys *sometimes* hate them for the same reason vintage guitar guys sometimes hate PRS.

    Yes, I've sampled all my snares, other than this one.
    I'll do this one when I get a chance.
    My later sampling methods are much better sounding than the early stuff- I have much better converters than I used to have and I am better at recording.

    I've been sampling my own snares and bass drums since before sample replacement plugins existed.
    I used to do sample replacement by dragging the individual hits in line- it takes a fair while, about an hour per track for a 4 minute song.
    When sample replacement plugins came out I was initially quite resistant to them but I mostly use Slate Trigger 2 now.

    The market is quite saturated with drum samples though so I like this being 'my collection'.
    Bands/artists can access it by hiring me to produce/mix a track or an album.
    I don't particularly want to do a commercially sold library of them, I'm not close to being enough of 'a name' in the industry, but never say never.

    Yes it is useful to have your own library of sounds (and a sense and record of how you do things/how "your sound" has evolved too).

    And I suppose if you ever move stuff on you still have the samples...
