Nice - I put flatwound 12s on my Artcore the other day and it feels like a completely different guitar and the tone change is a real shocker, in a good way. Going to do the same on my Jazzmaster next I think, it's got 11s on which feel like cheesy strings after playing t'other..

Forum don't work on my fone, but prob because my fone is shonky old methinks ..

I was going to put some 12s on my old Jazzmaster. Just put a set on my Thinline Jaguar and that made a noticeable difference to the sound and playability.

For a moment I thought the low E was not going to fit into the tuner. I put a set of locking tuners on last year and it literally just fitted in the hole.

I swear this heavy gauge stuff is just testosterone sloshing about :)

For me it was more that I wanted a stiff string tension.

Think 'surf' style fast tremolo picking and not so much of the 'blues bending'. Just on this particular guitar (and my Jaguar) gauge 12s work really well.

    As a teenager I played 11, 12 & 13s on my Strats for about 10 years.

There was a period of 5 years or so where I started slowly using lighter gauges and for the last 10 years of so I've been playing 10 & 11s on most of my guitars.

I just like the sound and feel of heavier strings on an electric - makes it respond more like an acoustic, more vibrant and powerful, but controlled. I like the same gauge (11s) on an acoustic... which makes it respond more like an electric, more shimmery and flexible :).

Nothing to do with testosterone, just hands and ears ;). 11s have the perfect combination of tone and feel, for me. I can go as light as 10s on an electric and as heavy as 12s on an acoustic, but lighter than that starts to sound weedy and twangy, heavier starts to sound strident and constrained.

I also like a wound 3rd on semi-hollow electrics, and plain on solids, generally.

I recently put 11s on my strat and tuned down to Eb which made it sound a bit more interesting for some reason + it helps with bends.

I agree with @ICBM, nothing macho at all, they just feel and sound better with heavier strings, simple as that :)

    Aye. You can't really use 9's or 10's in Drop-C and Drop-B.

You sure there's no hint of 'when I were-t-lad we used to use chunks of liberty ship anchor chain for strings, and get t-audience to hand us back us fingers after the gig ... that were-t-real guitaring ... kids today don't know they're born ...' :)

If I was bothered about that I wouldn't use 11s on an acoustic, because that's "wimpy" :).

I do find this odd, that as soon as anyone says they like heavier strings, they get accused of only doing it to be macho. If you knew me and the kind of music and bands I like and play in, you really wouldn't think that at all ;).

(I'm a short skinny guy with little girly hands and I usually only play in bands with women :p.)

I've got into the habit of having different gauges on different guitars, keep my fingers guessing. Nothing less than 10s though; 9s just don't fight back enough for me.

Try doing a five-step Gilmour bend with anything heavier than 10s!
