New Martin slope shoulders

My wish for a guitar that looks like a J45 but plays and sounds like a Martin might have taken a step towards becoming realisable:

    Sounds good to me. I can't see an mention of laminate back/sides anywhere though?

    Maybe my mistake on the laminate. The blurb says solid spruce and mahogany back sides. Hard to tell from that

    Yeah I think they're solid, Martin are usually pretty upfront about using HPL. Agree about the necks though

    Martin are missing a trick in their description - describing the top as solid and omitting the term when describing the back and sides is usually the manufacturer’s coy shorthand for laminate.

    Never played any long scale guitar, whether slope shouldered or whatever, that feels or sounds anything like a J45. It's a really fundamental element I think.

    Martin used to have different profiles, 

    D18/28/000-18's etc used to have 1 11/16" wide nuts, with 2 1/8" string spacing at the saddle

    A few other models including OM's, 00-18V  used to have 1 3/4" at the nut, and 2 1/4"/2 5/16" at the saddle. 

    Now the majority of models have 1 3/4" at the nut, and 2 5/32" at the saddle, I presume so they can have one spec for all.  Which I don't think is a great thing, as the nut width is probably a little too wide for some, and the saddle spacing is too narrow for finger pickers. 

    At least before the older specs catered for different playing styles opposed to just having a best of both worlds.

    Agree, although the OP says he's wants it to look like a J45 but play and sound like a Martin, so the longer scale actually fits the bill. 

    I guess the closest Martin to true J45 spec would be the Ralph McTell...pricey though.

    Yeah it's annoying. I really like their 1 3/4" necks but I'm not everybody, and narrower necks have their place.

    In the meantime I haven't seen one of these in the wild yet. Peach seems to have one but most of the big online shops still have them on preorder, and Westside didn't have any last time I was going past.

    Anyone tried one yet? Nothing local for me to try. Most reviews say light, honky and wild. Sounds great. Perhaps someone is bored of one and wants to move it on?!

    Another one in the slope shoulder but different category would be Larrivee L series guitars. I have an older L09 and it is definitely a surprise to play for what looks and feels like a slope shoulder design. A big but balanced tone which edges more towards the Martin camp with a 25. 5" scale length. The neck on the one I have is pretty chunky being an earlier one. I'm not sure how recent ones stack up. Larrivee seems to be a brand that gets overlooked, especially in what is quite a long-standing body shape. This one is rosewood b/s but I would be interested to play a mahogany variation.

    I had a play on the McTell when Martin did their GuitarGuitar roadshow a few months ago.  Quite a special thing - I think it was strung with 10s!  Superbly easy to play, lovely tone, only lacking a bit of low end and volume due to the thin strings.  Not quite like anything I've ever played, before or since, and not really like a J45 either, despite the obvious similarities.

    That McTell sig model had me totally baffled. I know he played an old 00028 from time to time but his playing is so synonymous with his J45.
