Oil City Pickups: A very strange custom job

Yep, this is a neck humbucker for a Telecaster  ... built as a custom order for a rather special customer. This is kinda like a narrow Wide Range in sound as It's essentially two telecaster neck pickups (one reverse wound) on custom bottom flatwork and seated on a standard humbucker baseplate. It's interesting as with one coil shut down you get a perfectly normal tele neck tone ... and a fat and quite aggressive sound in humbucking mode.
This is probably not one that I'd put into production, not least because it is a total pain in the arse to make ... but it's a fun concept nonetheless.

Oh I totally agree! I'm going to build one for the neck of one of my own Teles ... just cos it looks so 'out there'. Er ... and I don't charge myself for labour ...

That's interesting ... actually I'd never heard of John Jorgenson (I don't get out much)... so he certainly wasn't the rather special customer!  ;-)
Though it may well explain why I was shown a rather poorly made Fender Custom Shop version and asked to come up with something better.

You could price it accordingly. It’s effectively two pickups in one

I thought it was a double lipstick tube pickup at first glance. Certainly will beef up a weedy Telecaster neck sound!
More powerful than a PAF certainly!
