    Always had the image as a classic English eccentric inventor. No idea what he was really like but we had one of his radios (it’s up in the loft now) and the original idea for them to be used in the third world to help spread news and health advice/Information was certainly a noble cause.

    I don’t really know anything about him apart from the radio. We had one but it always seems more trouble than it was worth, although presumably not if it was a lifeline to you.

    His aim was to make a reliable way of listening to radio in Africa where information about AIDS was broadcast but not heard by the majority of the population.

    By all accounts he was far from rich as a result of his inventions.
