Quad Jam Session - sound recordings

What's Hot

Some people - with really good memories - may remember that about 30 of us got together in a rehearsal studio in Leicester for a day of jamming, talking gear, and generally having a good time.

It was, admittedly, ages ago.

The event was recorded, and the recordings have been circulating on the bootleg network for a while now, with early generation copies changing hands for mad sums of money.

Now that I've made all the money, I thought I'd release them here too.

Keep in mind that the line-up for each song changed, although the drummer (Octatonic) and keyboardist (Horse) were unchanged throughout and BigJon vocalised on many, and there were no rehearsals prior to turning up at the venue and pressing "record".  There were also a fair few last-minute stand ins for people who were scheduled to play something but couldn't make it on the day.

With that caveat in mind ... this is what happened on the day.
:)

There should be video to follow in a few days.

I kept this all to itself.

This was the last track of the day.  Some people had been playing for 3-4 hours by this point, which is a fairly long set in anyone's language.  We'd all been there on site for 5-6 hours.

I don't remember the actual line-up for this, but there must have been 6 or 7 different parts being played.  And I'll repeat, no prior rehearsal as a group.

Makes you think that it can't be that hard, right?

I think that everyone who made it to the session had a good time.

Huge thanks to everyone who got up and played something and allowed me to share the evidence here.
    :D

Even more huge thanks to Octatonic, who sat on the drum stool for hours and hours on the day, and to @Horse for keying the boards on just about every song too.

But an even huge-r thanks to @bridgehouse whose admin and organising efforts made it all happen incredibly smoothly on the day.

    Right, next one ...

    @mrkb -

Why do you think it's taken me so long to get these recordings ready for release???
    ;)

But that's another good point.  There's been no "processing" of any of these tracks.  It's all as recorded on the day with no enhancements or Live & Dangerous-ing.

    Download should be enabled now.

Cheers for download option - its been very useful to listen back to these, and was a great learning experience.

Next time I need to work on bending to pitch, and needs more distortion and a univibe!

@Alnico - see, this is what you missed. No skipping off next time, alright? ;)

Everyone played really well on the day - the atmosphere was fab, even if it was quite a lot to squeeze into the time. Some of the individual performances were exceptional - here's looking at you @impmann (Mr "I don't really know it but I'll step in and have a go....oh look I nailed it") and @bigjon for having stamina like I've not seen for a long time..

Even @Legionreturns was good. Can't believe I just said that...

That’s only because I took over his singing part - can’t believe he’s was going to try to play and sing at the same time!

Though I think he was singing on the second run though of Hard to Handle and that sounds good.

Shush. Don't tell him he has a good voice, he will get all big headed about it!

Nah, it was all being pitch corrected by that vocal processor he uses! Only a real Diva brings their own vocal effects to a jam session ;-)

A great day! Yes, genuinely, I didn’t know one of the tracks I played on - and some of the others I hadn’t played since the 1990s, hence one or two jazz notes.
The Pretty Vacant car crash still makes me laugh (as I know it does Colin) as I definitely had a ‘senior moment ‘ there...

  • It was a cracking day, I had a shed load of fun and learnt a lot despite having driven for 3 days to get there!

There were plenty of those moments by lots of us throughout that day - so you aren't alone!

Thanks for posting these @TTony .  And thanks to all on the day, it was good fun although the recordings show that my playing wasn't as good as it seemed on the day (not that I thought it was "good" at all, just acceptable would have done!).

Recordings always show up every little error - you listen a lot harder and in more detail. A live recording is also a very difficult thing to do!

Most importantly though, it's a chance to listen back, see where you went right/wrong and then practise/improve - lots of people record their practise at home to listen back with a more critical ear. I certainly spotted a few bits from my playing where I need to practise/work!

Certainly don't be disappointed about it - everyone did a really good job, and don't forget you got some valuable experience playing live with other people - next time you will be more relaxed and more confident.

I'm hoping this is a good encourager for lots of other newcomers to think about doing a Jam and getting that valuable experience.

It does go to show how much work goes into a well oiled and tight live act tho....

I thought the rhythm guitarist on the first version of 'Beat it' was top notch!! Nailed that main riff!! ;)

Seriously though, really enjoyed the day even if it was a bit scary having to play so early on the list. Thought everyone did a great job, and it was really well organised.

There was an awful lot of duck syndrome going on - calm on the surface, legs paddling like buggery underneath ;)

I hope lots of people got some valuable experience out of it

    Thanks for the audio files.

I've been a bit quiet on here and haven't signed up for any jams this year as work has been mental either side of two weeks holiday in the Amazon.

I've enjoyed playing back all the files and learning from them.

It would be a shame not to meet fretboarders again and I'll be signing up for jams next year,

    Chris.
