Was wondering if there are any brands of mandolin strings that are lower tension, along the lines of silk and steel or newtone heritage?

    Because of the short scale of a mandolin the strings have to be high tension. I'm no expert but I've played for a few years and I've never come across any alternatives. Sorry... You've just got to torture those fingertips until their used to it!

    What kind of mandolin have you got? You could try a bowl back or classical style one with a shorter scale which might give you some relief.

    it's a flat top, so i guess that's more classical style. It's mostly chord playing a struggle with, on the bass strings. Melody playing is fine (though still can't quite get 2 tone bends out of the thing).

    Has it been set up? I've had 2 an A shape and an F shape, both the same scale. Once I'd adjusted the bridge the A shape was okay, but the F shape was still impossible to play, probably a result of a poorly cut nut.
