My 1st teacher had a custom made acoustic with a cutaway and he was convinced it did make a difference. However, I don't think it's a good or bad thing, just makes it sound different.
re aesthetics most cutaways look pretty good, except dreads, that look stupid with a cutaway.

If its small bodied and made by Taylor, a cutaway is fine. If its a dreadnought made by anyone, a cutaway is punishable by firing squad.
Of course there are still some sensible electro acoustic dreads with no cutaway.
