Dean acoustics, what are they like?

danodano Frets: 1484
I'm looking at getting an electro acoustic and on eBay there is a Dean Exotica Splayed Maple for sale.

I know nothing about Dean's and always though of them as metal guitars but there acoustics look quite nice.

Anyone played / owned a Dean acoustic and can comment?

I had a Dean 7 string acoustic for a while, nothing special, but perfectly playable and sounded fine.
Imagine something sharp and witty here ......

I played a few many years ago. Pretty standard laminate acoustics - not terrible but not remarkable. In that price range when you get things like spalted maple it always suggest to me that a lot more effort is likely to have gone into making the guitar look flashy, as opposed to actually being built of high quality materials. There are far better acoustics in the range than Dean, in my opinion.

Tone is always subjective, but I suspect that a maple top combined with maple sides would make for quite a brash sounding instrument.

Overall, it's probably an ok guitar, but nothing particularly special.
