I bought this from the fantastic and helpful BBBlues (who, I believe, got it from Wazmeister  - take a look at his photos of it, on this forum, which are way better than mine).

This amp is still totally mint and I understand the build was overseen by Steve himself.

I love a beautifully made and stylish amp, which this well and truly is, but, frankly, its several price-points beyond my guitar playing ability and I am looking to trade sell it on.

Awesome, versatile, faultless amp. I am based in the West Midlands (very near to j5 of the M42) if you want to see it / play it.

Check here for more on the amp.

These are the pictures I took myself, tonight.  I should keep it but I have just bought a smaller amp (wattage and dimensions) that's nearer my ability:

@Wazmeister, how different is this to the j20? Volume, headroom and tone wise? I'm assuming it can do more BF open cleans? @Treewig1 pm'd you.

Mr. Waz will no doubt give you a better answer but to offer an extra perspective, I tried both a while ago and I think the decision is actually quite simple - if you really love the tweed sound, then the J20 is the one - fantastic (and very solid sounding for a small amp) tweed tones and the vibrato is sublimely swampy.

However if you want a more BF tone but like to get a bit tweedy occasionally, then the Skylark can actually get quite close, as it has a lot of flexibility in the tone controls (especially the mid, which has a HUGE range). I'm not sure about headroom, as I was really trying both with a home amp in mind and was more concerned with how they sound at lower volumes. In that situation the Skylark might be the best I've tried - the attenuator in there is absolutely outstanding.

    Hope that helps a bit.

Thanks for this jimification. I've not played a j20, so a bit lost on describing the difference! This is really helpful, thanks.

Ok, here's my thoughts. The Skylark and the Lazy J are miles apart... Literally. The LJ offers those tweed like mid rangey cleans into break up; the SL more Blackface chimey cleans into clipped OD. the SL is way more versatile, and the attemuator is the best ive ever tried.

Listen and watch the manual below. The sounds at 3.40 (for me) are typical superb Carr BF sounds

  • So, why did I move this wonderful amp on ? Well, at the time i owned (and still do) a Carr Rambler., which is stunning. I had the chance to part ex the SL against a (v rare at the time) Lazy J J20, for what i thought was a very good deal. Thats it !

This actual SL was a custom order for me, and i feel a real affinity for it. Im half tempted to buy it back...

Thank you for this Wazmeister. I'm half tempted to deliver the Skylark in person so I can see some of those amazing amps up you have!

I have to admit I love the amp but visually it is marmite, which is what held me back on it.

I've got one in slub grey all over and have got to say that I actually wanted one in the colours of this one! I think it looks fantastic. Totally agree with the comments here regarding the sound... The BF cleans are some of the best I've ever heard, wind up the mids and presence and you're in (to my ears) Black Keys territory. Put together incredibly well... Oddly enough my electro acoustic sounds superb through it too. Great amp and that is a steal.
