It's been up before, I keep going in and out of money. Priced to sell. Awesome, giggable amp

For sale is my MJW Roadstar 18 which I've been using for a while now. I had it serviced by Martin at MJW about a year and a half ago and have since installed a Tayden High Brit, which is a fantastic (and quite expensive) Celestion Greenback-style speaker - nice midrange bite but much more balance in the lows and highs than a Greenback, a great British-style speaker.

Specs are:
18-watt 2 x el84 power section
2 x 12ax7 preamp
Full TMB tonestack
Preamp gain and master volumes
Power/wattage control, with extra control on back panel to reduce fizz at really high attenuation levels
Built into a solid old Marshall 5010 chassis, one of the UK-made amps - looks a bit different! Not a 'showroom amp' by any means!

I've gigged this on and off for a while now but given the kind of music I play, I've been using it as a 'clean pedal platform' which it's done great at, but it's really more of a crunchy rock amp, great upper-mids and eager to overdrive. I'd keep it as a 'dirty' amp if I could but I only really need one gigging amp and my other MJW fits that bill.

Price is £350 firm, and I'm in Bolton/Manchester - can meet up to a reasonable distance but would very much prefer not to post. Any questions please ask!

  • No, it's pretty much straight in, though I'm sure Martin would mod it easily enough!

I've owned this before and it's a fantastic amp. Very nice overdriven tones. Super flexible.

  • Hi mate, trying to get money together at the moment, have a couple of other amps and made a deal with my missus that I wouldn't buy anything guitar related for a year - 1 month in, going strong!

    Looks lovely.

I don't have the money for a new amp atm, so I hope you don't mind me asking a question, but is this 'based' on any amp in particular, please?

  • Well you'll have to talk to martin at mjw, but as near as I can tell it's a simple reductive (not active) tmb tonestack with quite a bit of gain in the preamp and a relatively bright character, so somewhere between a jcm800 and a standard fender-style front end, but relatively flatter eq wise than either. Power section I think is a more refined marshall 18-watter - easy to overdrive but as it has a 'gain compensation' control on the back to go with the power scaling you can back it off so it sounds cleaner with a little more headroom. Quite versatile, though with the Tayden it's more geared towards rock. With my Eminence C Rex it's much more of a clean machine!

Thank you :) So you can get quite Fendery tones out of it as well as JCM800-style sounds? Well, it looks amazing, and from what you've said, @martinw has made it sound great too... I hope you get it sold soon, so I can stop thinking about what I could sell to fund it :)

  • Ha yeah it's a fantastic amp - if I wasn't looking to buy a house soon I would definitely be keeping it! Played quite a few gigs with it, always held up well!
