Ridiculous EBay prices for sending stuff like stickers from the USA

What's Hot
I remember a few years ago buying small items on eBay USA and the prices being realistic
Nowadays there are lots of items on there ,things like stickers  that could be sent for a few dollars
And the Shipping is like $20 $26  it’s absolutely mental  . I remember I used to buy all sorts of low cost items & you could justify the shipping  but + $20 to send Stickers or bits of card etc when the items only a couple of dollars is insane . There are a few people still with proper prices  I think it’s something g to do with ebay packing the stuff & working out the charges , I know for certain you could send paper & reading material at one time at discount prices from the US

  • Some of it could be the US Postal Service. They sort out some of the export/import crap so we don't have to.

Whammy Parts has a fixed price for shipping vibrato spare parts to the UK. Does not matter whether you buy one saddle roller or three complete stud-mount Pro bridges, weighing a ton. (Here, I am exaggerating for comic effect but only slightly.)

There is no logic to the charges.
    Be seeing you.

Just this morning I got this:

     Justin Johnson Official Store
You left an item in your cart
Hi Tannin, you added an item to your shopping cart and haven't completed your purchase. You can complete it now while it's still available.

    Complete your purchase
THUMB PICKS: Justin Johnson Signature Thumb Pick Set × 1 MEDIUM GAUGE (0.80mm)

What they didn't say  is that the pick was $23 ($15 USD) which is a bit steep but screw it, I'll pay that - but when I got to the shipping bit  they were asking  $39 postage  ($25 USD)!

Screw that. Nearly $40 to post a bloody guitar pick.

  • But from China it’s buttons. I seem to remember reading something about China’s status exploits a loop hole but given the massive volume it badly skews the market.

Living in NI this is a complaint of mine, i’m ‘offshore’ & get stung with fees which I feel shops could reduce but they don’t pay attention & just go with whatever the carrier says. E.g. current favourite Andertons, should be free over £149 but want £10 delivery for a pedal. Not just Andertons though.

^Assuming a parcel matching Royal Mail's max dims/weight there's no reason anywhere in the UK should have a surcharge - NI or Outer Hebrides.
However I suspect in this instance Andertons have volume deals with specific carriers so don't offer Royal Mail as an option.
Most every other courier charges more for "remote" locations (although saying that DHL doesn't surcharge to NI, but then they are the most expensive courier)

I wanted to buy a bag. It was about £100, and I was OK with that. The shipping was £266!

  • Once bought some crash bars for a Harley Sportster , the postage was something sensible & not overly what you’d expect ,but all these prices for picks stickers & 266 for a bag ,it’s crazy

Not quite sure why you are fussing about the postage, we have already determined that you are mad by considering paying $23 for a pick.

It really annoys me too, especially as I used to work for an online retailer and I know perfectly well that the cost of posting something like a sticker or a packet of six picks to the USA is a couple of quid.

A lot of sellers do it on purpose, ie I'll sell you a brand new Gibson Les Paul for £50, but it's not available for collection, but postage costs upwards of £3.5k - an actual UK eBay listing I've seen for a Gibson Les Paul, in the hopes of luring buyers in with what appears to be an amazing price, with the buyers not realising that the postage costs is actually the true cost of the item, and the item's listed price is actually closer to the true postage costs.

This doesn't just happen on eBay, it happens on Reverb, Amazon, Etsy and all others, even FaceBook market place - it's free but you have to get us to deliver it to you for more than the item actually costs in a proper store and no you can't arrange to have your own courier collect it from us is a very common one for furniture and other large items on FaceBook market place.

Dunno. £100 was about right. £366 would be vastly over the odds.

  • Yes I’m aware of those items where they are grossly underpriced & postage is bumped up
It’s pointless now though as eBay includes postage in final value fees. But these are items  that are listed at the price they are worth  but the postage is hugely inflated and it’s only happened in the last day 6 to 10 years

Actually, no. It's a fancy thumbpick so probably worth $10. But I was happy enough to pay $23 because Justin Johnson has provided me, completely free of charge, with very useful tuition, and a heap of great entertainment over the years (he is a wonderful guitarist). So I was happy to see a few extra dollars going his way. But $40 for postage? No. There are limits.

Overseas shipping is usually handled by eBay’s Global Shipping Sevice. The seller doesn’t set the postage price at all, except for the domestic postage to reach the eBay shipping hub. As a seller, you can’t even see how much eBay are charging. Besides, eBay add the postage a seller sets for domestic deliveries to the final value commission percentage, so it would be pointless to inflate the cost.

  • Spot on #Budgie  it’s the global shipping service that is responsible ,I’m sure overseas ebayers are losing lots of trade because of the ridiculous pricing
