Sold: Oily City Pickups - Airship Trooper and Dirty Secret - Masterwound

The photo is from the Oil City Pickups website and is of the actual pickups. They are from August 2018 and to my shame are unused. Both are brushed covers with dual black pole pieces.

£115 105 posted SOLD

Neck - Airship Trooper - standard spacing - 4 conductor - short legs
Inspired by a certain classic 60s/70s British rock band and their Les Paul wielding guitarist, for whom we at Oil City have a whole lot of love and respect.

A beefy and snarling yet classic voiced pickup that takes the 'PAF' concept and boosts it slightly without losing the clarity.
Punchy bas, glowing mids and a smooth clear top end characterise the tones available here.

Perfect for classic rock of heavier blues, this versatile pickup will happily 'metal it up' too. A5 magnet.

Bridge - Dirty Secret - f spacing - 4 conductor - short legs
A Jazz Blues (JB) tone monster the way it was before it came to Blows and stopped being your lover. Guitar pick is optional...A new hotrod for Surrey's favourite son.

For the modern player this a great pickup with lots of mids upfront. Team with a raging rectifier, Diezel, Engl etc and find a hard of nails tone that doesn't let up, yet remains musical. 43 gauge plain enamel wire and A5 magnet.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Have you compared the Dirty Secret to a JB? What are your thoughts?

@jonnyscaramanga ;I have not. I do have a JB/Jazz combo in guitar but have never had these in one.

The main benefit for the Dirty Secret is to get the benefits of the mids that the older JB is famous for, without the full nasal quality that the modern JB can suffer from.

@Oilcitypickups may be able to better describe the differences.

If I click on the link then it just downloads a .webp file. It seems to be Safari specific as I can see it in Chrome.

Just realised I completely forgot to get back to you about these @Elwood - apologies.
My missing Suhr pickup finally turned up in the post so I’m afraid I’m no longer interested in these. That said, they’re incredible pickups so have a bump on me and someone take these bad boys off @Elwood’s hands! #BARGAIN

Thanks @bad_alice glad you are sorted.

On a side note can you see the photo in the first post? Just checking as some members cannot see it.

No, I can’t see it either bud - there’s just a small square outline where I’m guessing the pic should be?
Gimme a shout if you need me to come back and check again if you find a way to reload it.
    Happy to help :)

@Elwood might be worth trying to upload the pics to Imgur and then share the link? That’s my go to solution on here anyway...

FWIIW, I have tried a recent JB Trembucker, a late Nineties Maricela Juarez wound JB and an OCP Scrapyard Dog Plus in the same guitar. Not exactly the same as each other - not least because the SYD+ was covered.
    Be seeing you.

    Hi Sauron,

I don't have an output value for them. I think it will be quite high (as the JB is quite high), but the way they are setup is to allow it work with the neck pickup rather than drown it out. @OilCityPickups may be a little more eloquent if he has time to comment!

The Dirty Secret is built to ape the JB before Seymour changed the formula, so they are around 14.7 rather than 17k like the later ones ... and built with 43 gauge wire not 44.

Where do your Scrapyard Dog and Plus sit in relation to those others?

  • I'm interested in the Airship Trooper but the black screws put me off. Could they be easily replaced with other suitably coloured screws by somebody who has no knowledge or skill in pickup building without causing damage?

I'm not sure to be honest. Ash could do it relatively easily I would have thought.

Double screw poles would be easy, you'd just need screws of the same thread and it's a DIY job. Easiest thing in the world, no matter how impractical a person you are. I've switched silver to gold screws before. The difference in tone between regular screws and hex screws is minute, so you could do either. You'd need the same length though; length apparently makes quite a noticeable difference to tone.

Slug poles would be impossible, AFAIK.

@Elwood, any idea what colour bobbins are under those covers?

@jonnyscaramanga double cream. I wanted zebra but none in stock at the time!
