Cornell Romany Custom for sale; MJW now sold

Time to move these poor unplayed beauties on, I feel. Both are very lovely, either cranked or at bedroom levels. Both very pedal friendly, or happy to have a guitar hooked straight in. Both are blue, both have Jensen speakers. Neither has been gigged and neither smells of wee, smoke or anything else unpleasant. Collection vastly preferable, from Guildford; in fact, the first one to be collected will come with a Proel amp stand with mic boom.

SOLD: MJW custom Roadstar 18, in sparkly blue tolex, with a pair of 10" Jensen neodymium drivers. The "custom" bit is that it's voiced to have a Matchless-esque sort of vibe; nice detailed top end in particular, lots of attack without being harsh. As you can see the tolex has started to come away just slightly at the back - only where it tucks in around the cabinet. I am happy to sort that before sale if preferred. £567 via PPG.

I have a "matching" 2x10 cabinet I made myself to the Award Session plans; currently unloaded. Free if you take it at the same time, otherwise it'll be £44 collected to anyone who wants it.

Secondly my Cornell Romany Custom. It's the standard Romany circuit, but in the Rambler chassis (so the controls are on the front) and in Air Force Blue tolex. Has a 12" Jensen and a valve-driven FX loop. £651.

  • I would dearly love that MJW but sadly funds and all that blah blah blah so can only say GLWS. Doubt these will take long to move!

Thank you. As you're not intending to purchase, might I enquire as to how sensibly I've priced 'em?

+1 for reasonableness. I've heard these amps in real life and both are crackers. I'd be very keen if I was in the country!

They also work very nicely as a left/right pair in a stereo rig - different but complimentary sounds.

And +2 - Given the necessary I'd definitely buy the MJW at that price - GLWTS :)

@Sporky - how close it to the Matchless?  I recall a long time ago you mentioning the Lightning circuit...

@martinw can probably answer that better, but my understanding is that it's the Roadster 18 circuit with some tonal changes.

I'd tried a Matchless Lightning combo and liked the clean sound a lot, but it was out of my price range. I had the Jensens already from my cab build project, and the blue tolex, and a few emails with Martin (who was a delight to deal with) later all was agreed. I've never had it side-by-side with the inspiration, but when it arrived and I turned it on it made very lovely noises. Detailed and bright but not harsh. Sparkly in looks and sound.

Also very mellow-able with the tone controls, of course.

Cheers, I'll look out for @martinw 's comments.  I'd probably want to drop a 12" speaker in also, so I'd be interested to know how easy the baffle comes out.

It's fairly close to the Matchless Lightning circuit, which in and of itself isn't too remarkable, being classic Fender/Marshall hybrid stuff. The preamp is identical, perhaps with a tweak or two, as is the power supply, and the power amp is adapted to use a Roadstar transformer set.

As Sporky said, I'd try it first. It sounds gorgeous! I was really pleased with how this came out, and the speakers suit it beautifully.

Sir Sporky, I'm extremely interested in the MJW and I live in Godalming.... Maybe it would be possible to visit and have a play....

It would be possible indeed. Evenings are OK (not too late though) or I'm working from home on Thursday and Friday (this may change).

@martinw and @Sporky - thanks both.  I'm definitely a 12" speaker man, so that will definitely be in my plans for modification - but consider me interested (pending the outcome of @PC_Dave 's visit of course).

I had always thought I was a 12"er (ooermissis) but the two 10s work beautifully.

With the Cornell I wasn't mad keen on the standard Romany with a 10 (a bit too tweedy for me, though not a bad sound) and the swap to the 12 made a huge difference, but the MJW doesn't have the "honk" I associate with 10s.

However, as per post above, I believe the MJW is now sold. So the Cornell is clearly the amp for you, Mr @Dodge... ;)

All gone sadly.  The top Rambler was the best amp I'd ever heard bar none.

Dodge! I recognise that picture! Think I new you from BaM. Fellow Cornell lover.

Sporky - Really interesting looking Romany. Never seen one like that before. Good luck with the sale of that bloody nice amp!
