Seymour Duncan JB jr Coil Split..

KevSKevS Frets: 309
I have tried to find the info on this pickup coil split, but can't seem to find it..

I know that,DC Resistance isn't the whole story,,even if the output is ok to match single coils in the other 2 positions,it could sound thin ,puny and quieter than the other 2 pickups....

I am going to be using a 10 way switch..

Is it worth coil splitting the JB Junior,,or is it best left as is ..?

  • I was using a Duncan Red Devil for a while. Sounded awful split, but parallel was excellent and matched with very well with the Kinman Woodstocks.

  • I have one in the bridge of my Silver Sky.  I did a partial split (emulating the PRS 3 wire config) by following this video.  I can't recall what value resistor I used, but it would have been in the 1 to 2 kohm range.

I haven’t tried that one, but I haven’t liked any other SC-sized humbucker split. As normula said, parallel is better - but that might be hard to do with the switching you have.

I had one in the bridge of a Strat using a Schaller super switch to give a split on p2. Sounded good. The split JB jnr sounds good on the Bea Chapmans.

The issue with splitting SC sized humbuckers is that because the bobbins are so small a fine gauge of wire, most often 44awg, has to be used to load on sufficient turns to get the output up to conventional SC levels or worse still hot ones! Finer wire means less treble and more compression - and the normal solution of tall narrow bobbins and ceramic magnets to cope with magnet/space limitations - this can lead to somewhat thin and at the same time 'honky' tones split.

This Switch does both series and parallel,it uses parallel to get pseudo humbucker sounds with 3 single coils....
It sounds complicated but it has position 1 to 5,,that is a normal 5 way Strat Switch..,,

Then it slides over onto a second parallel track to get positions 6 to 10..
There are more than one way to wire positions 6 to 10 but in the wiring I like..

Position 6 will end up with JB Jr in Series with the middle pickup.
This would normally a single coil of course.

So there would be a JB Jt as a full humbucker in a lot of use....

7 is both so called out of phase positions at the same time,,,so in parallel....
8 is neck and bridge in series..
9 meck and bridge in parallel like a Tele
and 10 middle and neck in series..

I have the switch in 2 Strats...It is way more versatile..

    Thank you for your help..
