Anyone built a Rack based USB hub?

About to get a new desk with 3x3U rackspaces.
I'd love do dedicate one Rack space to a USB hub, but boy are they expensive.
So I thougnt about building my own (just have a powered hub behind the rack panel with extension cables)
But short male USB A to USB A cables are non existent, and male to femle rack adapters are non cheap.
