Recommendation required, for new learner wanting to start guitaring :)

What's Hot
A friend has asked me if I knew which guitar would suit a 16 yr old lad wanting to start.  it would have to be left handed and the budget would be approx £250.

I am familiar with a couple of guitar shops in my area (Fylde Coast) so I could pop in there, but wanted to see if any of you guys have bought something similar and what to avoid.

TIA.

I played a Tanglewood from the "crossroads" series a few years ago, thay are the least expensive from the range but played and sounded good,

I'd actually recommend starting with an electric as it's easier on the fingers and quieter when practicing (badly) later at night. If he's set on acoustic, I'd go to a shop and try a few and would suggest looking for something that doesn't have too chunky a neck or too high an action, again for ease of playability while his fingers and hands are adapting. I've found Breedloves to fit the bill. There's also a range of opinion on whether it's worth a lefty learning to play right-handed, which it might be worth considering as it opens up a wider range of available gear, especially second-hand when he gets the GAS bug.

The word "Fylde" is usually linked to expensive guitars, the Fylde Oberon for example.

I'd say pop in a guitar store, chat with the staff and see what they advise.

I'm afraid I know very little about the £200-£300 market, sorry.

    :)

Thanks for the replies chaps, BUT HOLD THE PHONE!

Just been told it's an electric he's after.... So that makes thing easier for me as I'm up to speed on them.

I'll post in the Amp section about learner Amps, I think there are some good options in that area.

Oh. and the budget has been raised to £800-£900 (for guitar and amp)  so that opens up quite a few options.
    Cheers.

    Hi Mellish,

Yep I have a Fylde Alchemist, I have known about Fylde guitars for many years, I worked next door to Roger Bucknall when he was starting out.  - nice guitars.

It's already been pointed out but does it really have to be left handed or is that just being assumed? There are plenty of people on here who are left handed but play right handed, me included.

Thanks for the reply, yes I asked that same question. but insists on being a leftie.

I might try harder to persuade otherwise.

  • The Yamaha FG series is really good. A few of my learners play on them and they're quite nice (all right-handed players though)
