Martin binding problems

What's Hot
I've read about quite a few people having problems with binding coming unstuck on some of the 2012 and onwards D-18 guitars.

I think I also read that this was because of the glue Martin used at that point in time.

I'm thinking about buying such a used guitar, but am now worried about the possibility of this happening.  Based on my past experiences with some guitar techs and luthiers, I can imagine that some repairs might end up looking slightly less than perfect.  How much would it typically cost to have such a repair made to a high standard?

I'm just trying to weigh up the risk - perhaps it might be wiser to pay more now for a brand new guitar (I might be wrong, but I think Martin might be using more suitable glue nowadays).  However, I don't think the Martin UK warranty is particularly generous, so perhaps buying new won't provide much peace of mind!

I had this issue that was repaired under warranty in the UK by Martin. The standard of the repair was poor so I had Jon Press in Bristol (www.jp-guitars.co.uk) re-do it at my own expense. The result that Jon got was practically perfect but he did remark that it was a difficult job. I can't remember how much it cost, I'm afraid.

I've had several Martins but not that issue.

I'd say try the guitar. If you like it and you want it, buy it.

The UK has many good techs. I know of a few as  many on here do.

Don't be put off a guitar cos you feel it may develop a problem. So what if it does? You get it fixed.

  • In 2022, I had Jim Fleeting do an amazing job on my 2012 d18 which the binding came off on the back waist. He took the whole binding off refitted it and put an extra patch in. It's almost invisible and if you didn't know it was there you would be very unlikely to see it. It cost £150.

  • Happened to me on my 000-28 ec, shrinkage on the rear bindings in both waists, I would have taken it out to Brook, but it happened during lockdown,a friend carried out the repair and I’m perfectly happy with it. It’s never been an issue for me and it’s one of the few guitars I would never part with. If you are happy with the guitar buy it and enjoy, life’s too short.

  • Thanks very much.  I'm probably going to buy it - just need to arrange a visit.
