Just played a load of Bourgeois acoustics...incredible!

What's Hot
Hi all,

Well I found myself in the USA and played a load of Bourgeois guitars today at a local stockist...definitely the finest bits of wood I've ever been able to make sounds on.
I almost walked out with a Generation OM, and have been cursing the exchange rates and sale taxes all day.
These things have definitely ruined me for other acoustics :).

There’s a beautiful Bourgeois OM that I used to own up for sale again on this forum… the new prices are crazy now!

I’m sure they are great but it’s too much of a twatty name for me to buy it. I’d feel like I’m mocking myself while playing it.

When I first hear of Bourgeois, I erroneously assumed that
Dana was a woman. I thought it was great that there was such a successful, high profile female luthier.

I was quite disappointed several months later when I realised Dana was a man.  :/

I would buy that if I had previous experience of them but I've never played one (I'm picky about neck carve).
    Looks amazing. Why the sale!?

Have to say the Bourgeois sound best to my ears just listening online (never the same as in person!) - the Country Boy sounds amazing.

@thomasross20 not sure if you’re asking me or Mike. It’s an absolutely beautiful guitar, but it was the first spruce and mahogany guitar I’d owned and after a year or so I realised I’m definitely a rosewood body guy. I missed the warm overtones, so I replaced it with something in cedar and rosewood.

  • @tomjax ;
I don't know who I was asking, myself... but thanks for the reply!!
I'm the opposite - love mahogany. But everybody is different and that's fine.
    Dying to try a Bourgeois

@thomasross20 ; if I loved mahogany, I know what *I'd* be trying out: Hummingbirds.

I've owned three, two Modern Classics and one True Vintage. Great guitars.

The acoustic on the Stones' "Angie", that's a 'Bird.

    :)

  • Conversely, I've never played a Hummingbird that wasn't a bit muffled and dull. I desperately want to love them :(

@stickyfiddle ; oh all Hummingbirds are not great guitars. The great ones are out there but not always easy to find.

But if you *do* come across a good one, it can do it all.

  • @mellish I don't doubt it. But I've stopped looking since getting into the Martin thing. My Bourg Mahogany D is all the hog I should ever need.

Never tried a Bourgeois - never seen one tbh. Where I live it's a trek to even *get* to a decent guitar store.

I travelled approximately 7,500 miles for mine. Admittedly I had a 3-week holiday road-trip while I was there but, still!

Yeah, Abu Dhabi to Charleston SC. We did other fun stuff while we were there though.

As for the guitar, I just like to pop into interesting looking shops when I travel anywhere. Actually buying the damn thing was mostly MrsF’s idea.

Forsyth's in Manchester stock them. I was looking at some Eastman acoustics in there and noticed they had a few.

Lowering my expectations has succeeded beyond my wildest dreams.

    @Devil#20 ; that's a five-hour round trip for me.

Furthest I get is Birmingham. Guitar shops in Leicester that I used to go to are now gone. There's Melton Mowbray, Oakham and Stamford. Bit further Peterborough, Nottingham and Lincoln but, tbh, I'm happy enough with this Dove.

Thanks for letting me know, though :)

@thomasross20 you're in luck! Looks like there's a pre-owned OM in stock at Guitar Guitar in Edinburgh.

Ah yes, sorry! But they do move guitars from store to store with no obligation I believe…

  • Very true though isn't it 10% deposit etc?
I will rest on it. Think need a weekend trip to coda at some point.

@tomjax ; they do but normally you have to pay to get GG stock shipped to  your local branch, but it is refundable (apparently) if you choose not to buy.

  • I always feel a bit pressurised when that sort of thing is mentioned TBH.
A kind forum member here has a Bourgeois and is relatively local so I might get to actually try one soon - the neck carve is important to me so I look forward to that.
