FS: 'The Smuggler’s Bucket' 1982 Carlsbro Echo

Let me paint the scene. It's 11th February 1982.

In the US, Centerfold by J. Geils Band topping the charts. Over in the UK it's Computer Love / The Model by Kraftwerk. Ronald Reagan and Thatcher are frolicking.

The alchemists at Carlsbro have just finished putting one of the Echo marvels together and packaged it up for delivery to a dusty old guitar shop.

What you might not have known at the time when you spotted it on a display case, was that this would be the ideal device for stashing your latest-generation anti-histamines. You discover it can fit a few packs of Cetrizine tabs in there and your mum won't find out.

You get the pedal. You crank up the delay knob. You are taken back by the magic that the Reticon SAD4096 bucket brigade is capable of. It pitch shifts on the trails. It makes some crazy noises. You play for Wembley with your eyes closed. It's bliss.

bliss.blliiiiisss boou9889oiosl..s....zzzzzz

You decide to nickname it The Smuggler's Bucket.

£150, posted, lets you re-live the dream.

You’re cool again.

  • I had the blue flanger in the early 80s as well as this and they and my Roland JC were all over loads of sessions.. I should buy it ( still have the jC) amazing...I'm fairly certain I threw both of my carlsboro fx pedals away !

They’re non drowsy, @MikeDearing, so the decay effect on the longer trails are unaffected.

  • I take it that the original aluminium enclosure is hidden under black paint?

@HarrySeven, it looks like there were two versions, aesthetically at least. One with silver enclosure and one with black. This one is in black anodised aluminium with painted steel side plates. The aluminium has not been painted.

    Aha.

99.99% of the ones I’ve seen previously were silver. I assumed the black ones I’d seen had been painted.

    Cheers! :)

Inexplicably, this marvel of British engineering is still here. Make me a silly offer and save it from gathering any more dust.

The memories…I think this was the second pedal I ever bought around maybe 1984/85 . The first was a TS9 for  I think £12 from the same fellow in Alvaston Derby. The gut bucket delay was a bit more expensive I think £18 . It broke after a week and I think Carlsbro repaired it for free as I recall . I think it broke again and I can’t remember what happened to it after that.
The Ibanez was sold on for £12 again  as it didn’t give me a “good sound”.
I was young , and knew nothing …. Oh well
this thread a trip down a distant memory lane
