Literally gone in 60 seconds...
I will admit to being something of a compressor nerd, and have owned many variants over the years; the Fairfield Accountant is one of the very best, and is extremely chic in its raw metal frock, as well as being surprisingly flexible in operation.

This is all analogue, JFET feedback compression, and works equally well with all signal sources; guitars, bass, vocals, synths, even whole mixes.  Simple controls allow change to the threshold, compression ratio, and makeup gain.  It is, in my view, best to just jump in and flick a few switches and crank the single rotary until you find something you like; that something varies between very natural, studio type compression and plenty of squish and spongy attack.
