    Thumb independence. Specifically maintaining a steady monotonic bass.

    I can learn a piece that has a monotonic bass through repetition but if I try to improvise I can keep it going for two or three bars but then at some point my thumb invariably "forgets" to play.

    I don't seem have a problem with alternate bass. My thumb seems quite happy to move between bass strings while playing a melody on the high strings without having to think about it. The thumb and fingers work together. Not so with monotonic.
