Hi folks, just at my bro in laws and he’s got a taylor 110. As per photos, the heel joint is coming apart and not sure why. It’s not been left near a heat source. Just wondering what would be involved to repair this and how much .
cheers!

Most Taylor’s of the age have bolt on necks. There’s a label on the inside covering the bolt heads. They just need to be tightened. Have a read here: http://www.frets.com/FretsPages/Luthier/Technique/Guitar/NeckReset/TaylorReset/taylorreset.html

The  heel  is normally  a block of wood, glued onto the neck and shaped . On the best guitars  the heel block  is an upside  L shape, making the join stronger .  It looks to me as if the heal block  is coming apart. If this  is true  the neck will need to be removed so it can be glued back together agine .

I assume the pics were added later .

Is that a split at the glue joint, or a clean break in a solid heel? Taylors are made both ways depending on the model. It's hard to tell in the pic but it looks more like a break in solid wood to me - if so, that's actually easier to fix (perhaps counterintuitively) since you don't need to worry about old glue residue interfering with the new glue.

  • It looks to me to be  a glued heel joint that has separated as it’s a clean split around the heel. Although I could be wrong. But was thinking the neck would need to be removed and joint cleaned and re-glued. I’ll add some extra pics as I’m still with the guitar.

I don't know what Taylor's warranty (and irrespective if bought used) I'd get in contact with them before undertaking a repair, they may put it right.

  • That's definitely a parted joint rather than a split in the wood. Apart from the repair, of course, it would be good to know the cause. Taylor might help there too. They've probably seen this before.

Yes, when you see it from the other side there's a more obvious change in the wood grain.

  • Cheers all!
i’ll get him to contact Taylor and see what they say. Think the guitar is approx 8 years old so well out of warranty.
Any ideas of cost to carry out this kind of repair?
