NGD - 2017 Taylor 712e 12 Fret

What's Hot
So in something of an arse-about-face move, I've nailed my colours to the mast and am focusing completely on acoustic guitar for the foreseeable future. I had a big sell off of gear and am now left with one instrument and what a beauty.

It's a 2017 Taylor 712e 12 Fret. A good bit more high end than I was planning on getting but a bit of a new job present to myself as well as selling off the other gear.

I actually had the 14 Fret version of this guitar about 18 months ago but sold it to a fellow fretboarder when I realised I wanted to get into electric guitar as well.

Having now gone full circle, the short scale has been a revelation, as someone with weak/slight hands, it's so comfortable to play. The sound that projects from these Taylor GCs is absolutely incredible. It was noticeable how much more volume and sustain came from the guitar than the Martin 000-18 I played at the same time when narrowing in on what I wanted.

Visually I think this is one hell of a looker. The light Lutz spruce and Rosewood look so good, and I love the herringbone Douglas Fir in the rosette. I think the slotted headstock and tuners look all kinds of cool too.

Guitar for life, without a doubt. Now I just have to get good enough to justify having it!

  • Lovely that. I deeply regret not buying one I played a couple of years ago. Enjoy

Thanks Mark. Do you still have the 14 Fret 712? Hope you're enjoying it. I very nearly contacted you asking if you still had it and to let me know if you were looking to move it on, but once I played the 12 Fret I was hooked on the short scale.

Excellent stuff, very nice. I think the 12-fret tone on Taylors is superior to the 14-fret variants too. Enjoy!

  • Lovely n congratulations.

    I want another.

I think taylors r underated amongst the acoustic world for some reason probably a bit to do with guitar snobbery.

I had a 816 GS n loved it tbh, and as good as most guitars.
It was a top level guitar imo. only got rid because I’ve to much stuff n are more into semi acoustics I guess n my main acoustic is a collings.

Hard to call them underrated - they are the biggest acoustic guitar maker with nearly a quarter of the market share... I think that some people think they are kinda the PRS of the acoustic world and associate them with some kinda cork sniffers/snobbery, but who knows...

Yeah I think there’s probably a little bit of that going on, I think people associate them with the opposite of tradition and thus they are maybe overlooked by purists, for want of a better word.

Ever since I took up guitar 3/4 years ago I had my heart set on a Martin, it was the only brand I wanted....yet I’ve never played one I liked.

Same here! My first “proper” acoustic was a Taylor 110. Had the run of the shop in Andertons and it sounded way better than just about anything up to over double the price, including every “low end” Martin they had at the time. Only at around £1500 did I start to hear anything I preferred a little bit more, but that was way out of budget at the time.

I sold it because I’ve since gone off dreadnought handling a little in general and prefer the sound of the 12-frets for recording - but now have a lovely 322ce that I’ll probably grow old with.

I very nearly opted for a 322e 12 Fret but they couldn’t get it down to a price I was happy with. I got a decent deal on the 712 and am glad I stretched my budget as it’s gorgeous, and will definitely be with me for ever!

It’s a winner. I love all the wood trim on the 700-series - super classy and understated yet reassuringly detailed.

So after just yesterday declaring that this guitar will be with me forever, it’s now gone.

I made the mistake of playing the 812 DLX when I was still within my exchange window and I had to have it!
